Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) is looking to fill two vacancies at the level of Assistant Professor (UD) in the field of Earth, Energy, Sustainability and Global Challenges

Job description

LUC seeks to appoint two Assistant Professors to join the staff for teaching and research in the Earth, Energy, and Sustainability major within our international Liberal Arts & Sciences honours bachelor of science (BSc) programme centered around ‘Global Challenges.’ Starting date: August 1, 2020.

The Assistant Professors will be responsible for teaching undergraduate (bachelor) students and conducting research in fields of environmental science that are particularly relevant to current global challenges. Examples of these fields include environmental biology (e.g. environmental science, ecosystem services, conservation biology), energy systems (e.g. energy economics, energy modelling, energy policy) and natural resource management (industrial ecology, environmental geography), geology, geographic information systems but also other relevant areas of study. This appointment will also involve teaching in the compulsory interdisciplinary first-year course ‘Global Challenge: Sustainability’ and/or in our methodology courses (including statistics, mathematical modelling, geographic information systems).

The Assistant Professors should show clear affinity with the ‘Global Challenges’ focus of LUC’s programme.  In addition to the core international academic staff based at LUC, leading scholars from the other faculties of Leiden University participate in the teaching of the programme. LUC staff is able to take full advantage of being part of Leiden University while also contributing actively to the energetic and stimulating atmosphere of our college community in The Hague. This means that the Assistant Professor will also be expected to promote links and synergies between LUC and other institutes within the University relevant to the Earth, Energy, and Sustainability major. LUC also values close connections with societal and governance partners and stakeholders, in particular in the city of The Hague, but also outside of the city.

Requirements

  • Teach undergraduate students in an international and interdisciplinary programme at both introductory and advanced levels;
  • Connect to other institutes within Leiden University, regarding both teaching and research, as relevant to the BSc Earth, Energy and Sustainability major;
  • Have an interest in making linkages with national, international, and non-governmental organizations within their respective field;
  • Carry out research, publish, and work towards obtaining external research grants with an interest in involving bachelor students;
  • Participate in and contribute to LUC’s recruitment and admission activities;
  • Participate in and contribute to the social and academic activities of LUC;
  • Serve as an academic advisor to a group of students;
  • Supervise bachelor research theses (Capstone).

Conditions of employment

The successful candidates will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. They will be appointed for one year with the option to continue for a second year depending on performance and finances. The salary will be in the usual range for an Assistant Professor; the level depends on previous experience, and normally ranges between € 3,475.- and € 5,405.- (scale 11/12 according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities), gross per month on the basis of a full-time appointment.
