Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences invites applications for track to tenure position as Associate Professor in Digital Culture at the Department of Culture Studies, Tilburg University.

Job description

Department of Culture Studies offers a BA and MA programs and hosts a dynamic research group working on the impact of digital technologies on contemporary sociocultural life at all levels and in all domains of society, including art, literature, language, politics, education and health. It focuses on media strategies and creative phenomena in micro and macro public spheres in the digital world, and the management of linguistic and cultural diversity. In the department’s research, online and offline dimensions of sociocultural life are seen as fundamentally intertwined and inseparable. Our Bachelor Online Culture is chosen as the top program in the Netherlands. 

The position comprises both a research and a teaching component. The successful candidate will teach and supervise students at all levels in the field of Digital Culture and take part in the continuous development of curricula with other colleagues in the Department of Culture Studies, in particular the BA Online Culture and the MA track Digital Culture Studies. The teaching associated with the position will include courses in digital media and the digitalization of culture and society, including practices of civic engagement in social media; skills in digital methodologies (digital ethnography/discourse analysis), contemporary themes in digital culture and critical media studies.

Requirements

Qualifications and personal qualities
To be qualified for the position, the applicant must have a doctoral degree in Digital Culture or a relevant field. 

  • Applicants must have a strong publication record of empirical and theoretical research within the field of digital culture.
  • Digital ethnographic or digital discourse analytical skills are vital.
  • The successful applicant must be a team player. Capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary team is essential.
  • Potential to strengthen our department’s Digital Culture research activities is important. A successful record of attracting external research funding is preferred.
  • Applicants must have solid experience in digital culture and digital media (preferably including in algorithmic culture, and in discourse analytical/ethnographic approaches to the study of digital culture) 
  • Teaching experience at the university level and demonstrable didactic skills.
  • Medium of instruction in Digital culture is English and applicants must have outstanding English skills.
  • Interest in the further development of Diggit Magazine, an e-zine for both students and academic staff. 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: track to tenure.

We offer 

  • The position will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as associate professor (“universitair hoofddocent”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 5,190 up to (maximally) € 6,317 gross per month. The successful candidate receives a track to tenure position of four years, which is turned into a permanent position when our tenure requirements are met (these are available upon request). Decision after 3,5 year.

  • Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment, such as a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually), an options model and reimbursement of moving expenses. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies. 
  • Starting date is negotiable, but the starting date on August 1, 2021 is desirable.

Research and education at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) has a unique focus on humans in the context of the globalizing digital society, on the development of artificial intelligence and interactive technologies, on their impact on communication, culture and society, and on moral and existential challenges that arise. The School of Humanities and Digital Sciences consists of four departments: Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Culture Studies and Philosophy; several research institutes and a faculty office. Also the University College Tilburg is part of the School. Each year around 275 students commence a Bachelor or (Pre) Master Program. The School has approximately 2000 students and 250 employees.
