We offer a tenure track position for an assistant professor in the philosophy of media and technology. We will support you to develop yourself from assistant professor to associate professor in a 6-year tenure track.

Job description

Erasmus School of Philosophy is seeking to appoint an assistant professor in philosophy, in the area of Philosophy of Media and Technology. The main components of the job, besides administrative tasks (10%), will be teaching (50%) and research (40%). The teaching component will involve preparing and teaching courses in contemporary philosophy and philosophy of media and technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as supervising students writing their theses. The research component will address contemporary technological developments and their societal ramifications, such as the new media ecology of democratic life, the potentially disruptive effects of blockchain technologies, the transparency of AI and algorithmic governance, the influence of technology on the ecology of attention, and the changing role of privacy and personal identity, as well as changes in the socio-technical imaginaries of the human and in the role of the humanities in times of digitalization. The candidate is expected to contribute to Bachelor programs, the Master programs Philosophy Now and research (via publications, supervision of PhD researchers, methodology development and acquisition of research grants both nationally and internationally. Also, the candidate is expected to participate in societal deliberation and public debate (public philosophy) as well as in our vibrant intellectual community (via colloquia, meetings, etc.).

Requirements

The candidate should have acquired a PhD in philosophy and should be interested in contributing to education, research, and societal interaction in accordance with the profile and reputation of ESPhil, that is, the combination of academic excellence with the development of a philosophical perspective on contemporary societal challenges. On the basis of a solid grounding in 20th and 21st contemporary philosophy spanning post-structuralism, critical theory, phenomenology, and pragmatism, as well as a specialization in philosophy of media and/or technology, the candidate is able to formulate (and support students to formulate) philosophical responses to societal challenges while also drawing on practical, normative and cultural perspectives such as Marxism, gender theory, and postcolonial theory. Moreover, the candidate should be interested in building bridges with other disciplines at EUR (notably within the social sciences and the humanities) and in the broader context for inter-university collaboration (Erasmus MC, TU Delft, Resilient Delta).

Your experience and profile:

  • You have a PhD degree in Philosophy
  • You are a team player and have excellent collaborative skills for building networks with colleagues and students within the social sciences and the humanities
  • You can formulate (and support students to formulate) philosophical assessments of societal challenges, building on perspectives such as new materialism, gender theory, postcolonial theory, critical/transformative pedagogies, and artistic research
  • You have post PhD working experience (preferably two years or more) in an academic environment
  • You hold a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are willing to acquire one soon.
  • You have a proven track record in research and teaching
  • You have experience with acquisition of funding at national and European levels
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English and Dutch at an academic level, or willing to learn Dutch

Conditions of employment

An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The selected candidate will be offered a contract at the level of Assistant Professor, starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor after 6 years upon successful performance as judged according to specified tenure track conditions.

In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at a maximum of CAO NU scale 11 with a minimum of € 3.974, - and a maximum of € 5.439,- gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits, like a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision, and we offer partially paid parental leave. Employees can also use EUR facilities, such as the Erasmus sports center and the University library.

Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) of Erasmus University Rotterdam is a leading research and teaching institution in the Netherlands.
