Job description

In this PhD-position you can immerse yourself in the field of Image-guided therapies. Contribute to the development of advanced medical technology and its clinical applications. Learn about the biological effects of heat and how it can play a role in therapy.

The CARES-project aims to develop personalized MR-guided thermo-chemotherapy for treating breast cancer. Your assignment within the project is to deliver the best MR-thermometry solution for the job. To achieve this, you will implement and test MR-imaging methods as well as the image data processing required to convert the images into MR-based temperature estimates. You will demonstrate that these methods work in phantom setups and in healthy volunteers. You will have the unique opportunity to work on MR-systems of Philips and GE Healthcare. You will learn how to use the real-time images transfer interface between the MR-scanner and the hyperthermia device from industry experts. Finally, you will report your results at international conferences and workshops, as well as in international journal papers.

Requirements

  • MSc in (applied) physics, technical medicine, or (bio)medical technology/engineering
  • Hands on. Understands how the components build the system.
  • Proficiency in Matlab, python, or similar, with excellent (image)data processing skills.
  • Teamplayer, thriving in an interdisciplinary environment. with strong communication skills.
  • Curious with strong communication skills.
  • Understanding of MR physics, and signal formation is a pro.

Conditions of employment

The maximum salary for this position (36 - 36 hours) is € 3.677,00 gross per month based on full-time employment.

In addition, we offer an annual benefit of 8.3%, holiday allowance, travel expenses and career opportunities. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Cao University Medical Centers (UMC).

Department

This is a collaborative position between UMC Utrecht and Erasmus MC. In Utrecht, you will be part of the research group image-guided molecular interventions, which is part of the Imaging and Oncology Division of the UMC Utrecht. In our division, there is a strong education and research program in imaging and (MR)image-guided cancer therapies, such as MRI-guided radiotherapy, MRI-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound and radioembolization.

You will be based in the UMC Utrecht, but will spent approximately 40% of your time at the departments of Radiotherapy and Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Department at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. There, you will be part of the research group in hyperthermia treatment and the research group in magnetic resonance imaging physics in medicine.

The CARES consortium, is a collaboration with Erasmus MC, AUMC, UMC Utrecht, and TU/e as academic partners and will put you in direct contact with imaging device industry.
