Job description

The Department of Public Administration & Political Science at the Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) has an opening for a Full Professor of Empirical Political Science. As the selected candidate you are expected to play a leading role in continuing and expanding our top-quality teaching and research and provide academic leadership in an interdisciplinary academic environment. Your expertise is recognized in the field of empirical political science. More specifically, you display a successful track record in the fields of political institutions and/or political behaviour within and outside Europe.

Teaching
You will play a crucial role in the future development of the top-rated Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Political Science at NSM, particularly in the domain of representative government and (quantitative and qualitative) political science research methods. You are expected to demonstrate a solid commitment to maintaining the highest possible quality in teaching.

Research
As the Department seeks to develop further as an internationally renowned team of researchers, you will develop a long-term vision and associated strategy to promote the realization of this ambition. You are expected to develop, together with the researchers within Comparative Politics, a centre of expertise in representative government. You have an excellent track record in securing research funding and have successfully supervised postdocs and PhD candidates. You have access to a relevant (inter)national network that will bring the realization of the department’s long-term research ambitions closer.

Impact on society
NSM is committed to contributing to society through critical (but impartial) reflection, by offering new perspectives and providing sound academic knowledge. As an academic, you are expected to develop a high profile in public debates, and to establish and maintain ties with relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

You are internationally recognized as a top-level researcher in the field of Empirical Political Science, as demonstrated by publications in top international journals and with leading academic publishers, and you have a proven track record in securing research funding. You have expert knowledge of theoretical and empirical developments in the chair’s field, especially in representative government and in qualitative and quantitative methods of political science research. You have excellent teaching skills and broad experience with a variety of teaching environments. A Dutch senior university teaching qualification (UKO) or equivalent is required. You are prepared to invest in educational innovation. Furthermore, you have demonstrated to be able to provide academic leadership. You have a clear perspective on the development of Political Science as a discipline and of the place of Political Science in Nijmegen within this development. You have command of the Dutch language or will have mastered the Dutch language within 4 years.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: five years, with the possibility of extension for an indefinite period.


A maximum gross motnhly salary € 7,766 based on a 38-hour working week
the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO): Full Professor, Level 2 (Hoogleraar, niveau 2)

Department

Nijmegen School of Management

Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and education, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organizations in both the public and private domain. There are seven focus areas within NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography and Spatial Planning. NSM embraces a multi-disciplinary approach whenever appropriate. Altogether, NSM employs 265 full-time staff, of which 75% are academics.

The Political Science chair group, with a staff of 20-25, is part of the Department of Public Administration and Political Science. Together with the professor of International Relations, the selected professor of Empirical Political Science will be responsible for education and research in the field of political science.

Research by members of the Political Science chair group is conducted in the context of the Institute for Management Research (IMR) and the Department of Public Administration & Political Science. Members of the chair group actively participates in several of IMR’s multidisciplinary research groups (‘hot spots’). In this setting, they focus on themes within the three sub-disciplines represented within the group: Comparative Political Science, International Relations and Political Theory.
