The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has the following vacancy: PhD student ‘Systems theory description of thermo-acoustic instabilities’
in Dynamics and Control group, Department of Mechanical Engineering

The PhD student position is available in Multi-phase and Reactive Flows group, and will be supervised by prof.dr.ir. I. Lopez Arteaga.

Job description

Section description

In the section Dynamics and Control of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, research is focused on the sub-areas nonlinear dynamics and control, acoustics; active noise control, structural optimization and vehicle dynamics.

The goal of the project titled 'STABLE-System based thermo-acoustic design of central heating equipment' is to develop an original theoretical, numerical and experimental analysis framework based on a system level description of the thermo-acoustic behavior of heating systems. This project, sponsored by TTW, is a joint project of the groups Dynamics and Control and Multi-phase and Reactive Flows with 2 PhD positions (one at each of the groups). The 2 PhD students will work in close cooperation.

Aim of the PhD project, Tasks

The PhD project at the section Dynamics and Control of the Department of Mechanical Engineering focuses on the development of system/network theory and framework for combustion instability analysis. This includes establishing the relationship between generic two-port network theory and thermo-acoustic system modeling, investigating relationships between burner phenomenology and burner properties on a system level, analyzing the validity and application of network stability criteria to the case of thermo-acoustic systems, and studying the intrinsic acoustic instability of combustion in the context of network theory.
