Job description

Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) of the Erasmus University Rotterdam invites applicants for a professorship in Health Services Management and Organisation (HSMO) and chair of the HSMO department. 

The main tasks of the professorship will be research, acquisition and education with a focus on innovation, implementation and evaluation of management and organisation of health services. Practical relevance of scientific research is highly valued and that research should be both nationally and internationally oriented. Acquisition will focus on national and international funding and third party contributions. The educational activities encompass the development, coordination and teaching of courses and thesis guidance, primarily in our bachelor and master program Health Care Management. The professor is expected to develop and maintain a national and international network with key players in both the field of health science and health practice.

As a chair the candidate is responsible for heading a department consisting of approximately 20-25 fte personnel of a variety of disciplines. This responsibility involves financial and HR management and strengthening the research focus of the department. As the department is multidisciplinary in nature, the chair is expected to play a linking and bridging role between the various disciplines.

As a department chair the candidate will be part of the ESHPM management team. In this role the candidate will contribute to realization of the School’s mission and vision, and share the responsibility of managing ESHPM in collaboration with the other department chairs, the director of education, the director of research and the vice-dean.

Requirements

Candidates for this position will have a background in health sciences, or in business administration, organisation science or similar with a clear interest in the health sciences domain. We require proficiency in English and Dutch, or a willingness to learn Dutch. The candidate should be able to operate as a bridge builder between different research methodologies, different disciplines and different research themes. Furthermore, strong candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • ·       Experience in an academic leadership role, preferably as an endowed or full professor in the field of health sciences, business sciences, or organizational sciences
  • ·       Excellence in research with scientific rigor and practical relevance
  • ·       Experience with more than one research methodology, discipline and research theme of the department
  • ·       Participation in relevant national and international academic, policy and healthcare networks
  • ·       Success in the acquisition of research funding from national or international bodies or agencies
  • ·       Relevant teaching experience and the ability to develop, teach, and continuously improve high quality courses at different levels

Conditions of employment

Internationally-oriented and varied work within an enthusiastic team, with attractive fringe benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). Your initial employment term will be 4 years but this may be converted into an open-ended contract if your performance proves satisfactory. Your remuneration will depend on the position, your specific knowledge and experience. It will be calculated on the basis of full-time salary ranging between €5,485 and €9,375 gross per month (salary scales 15, H1, or H2; CAO NU). Erasmus University Rotterdam offers attractive terms of employment, including a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end payment of 8.3%. In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. For international spouses we have set up a dual career programme. The facilities for EUR staff members include the Erasmus sports centre and the newly renovated University Library.

Department

Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is leading in the Netherlands with its educational and research activities targeted at policy and management issues in health care. ESHPM offers a bachelor programme, five master programmes and post-academic educational programmes and courses. At ESHPM, research and educational activities are closely intertwined. Knowledge and experiences of various scientific disciplines such as economics, law, social-medical sciences, organisational science and public administration are brought together and applied to the health care sector. This multidisciplinary approach to education and research is unique.

ESHPM is located in the Bayle (J) Building at campus Woudestein of Erasmus University Rotterdam and has strong ties to Erasmus MC. Currently, approximately 1000 students are engaged in one of our programmes and 160 people are employed at ESHPM. Internationalisation is highly valued at ESHPM. The department of Health Services Management and Organisation (HSMO)

The teaching and research of the department in the domain of health services management and organisation are closely intertwined and cover a broad range of management and organisational areas such as organisational innovation, eHealth, ICT, integrated care, operations management, organisational behavior, and financial management. The research is organized around the strategic themes organisational improvement and development, technological innovation in management and organisations with eHEALTH and ICT, patient and professional co-creation, and global health. These are all themes of scientific and practical importance in the field of HSMO in the coming years. The research is focused on improving the organisation and management of health services, based on empirical studies with descriptive and evaluative designs, and qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods methodologies. The department also increasingly engages in design and action research. In recent years, the department has published in leading journals such as BMC Geriatrics, BMJ Quality & Safety, Health Care Management Review, Health Policy & Planning, JAMIA, MSOM, and Plos One. Current research projects take place in The Netherlands, Europe, and across the globe in countries such as China, Colombia and Iran. The department is a partner in several Horizon 2020 projects. The educational activities comprise teaching, the development and the coordination of courses in the Bachelor program, the Master Health Care Management, and the premaster. The staff of the department includes three Endowed Professors, three Associate Professors and nine Assistant Professors. Together with the PhD students and assistants, the staff consists of 23 FTE.
