Job description

The health of humans, animals and ecosystems are tightly interlinked and the Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries on earth, both in terms of humans and livestock. We are interested in studying the dynamics of viral infections in the interaction between livestock, humans and environment through the use of next generation metagenomic sequencing and immune response profiling. Therefore, Erasmus MC and the University of Utrecht Veterinary faculty are recruiting two PhD-students to work in a collaborative project assessing the role of the virome in the health of humans living near high density livestock farms. The positions will be placed in the context of the Netherlands Centre for One Health (NCOH).

The PhD-student based at Erasmus MC will focus on virome sequencing and analysis to identify markers for exposure to animals and the excreta, and to search for possible causes of diseases in relation to these exposures. The project plan includes the potential for (immune)-profiling of host responses to potentially relevant viruses found in the metagenomic analysis.
