Job description

The Informatics Institute (IvI) is recruiting an assistant professor Assistant professor Multiscale Scientific Computing.

Simulation-based Science is about formulating computational models of phenomena that we observe and performing computer simulations in order to deepen our understanding of the complex adaptive systems that underpin these phenomena. An important feature of such complex adaptive systems is that they are multiscale. Multiscale simulations, certainly when executed on high performance computing resources, benefit strongly from generic algorithms for multiscale computing. As we move into the exascale performance era we need to drastically change the way we use HPC for Simulation-based Science.

The tenure tracker is expected to contribute to fundamental research on multiscale scientific computing with an emphasis on High Performance Multiscale Computing. The big challenge will be to design generic multiscale modelling paradigms, including generic scale bridging methods, and multiscale computing algorithms, and their automatic mapping to (future exascale) heterogeneous HPC systems. The research will be pushed forward by a variety of application areas, specifically those currently addressed in the Computational Science Lab (e.g. Computational Biomedicine) and includes building bridges to those application communities.

The tenure tracker is expected to acquire his/her own independent funding from sources such as the Dutch Science Foundation, the European Commission, and industry.

In terms of teaching, the tenure tracker will contribute to the master Computational Science and the Bachelor Computer Science, or related programs. The candidate is expected to coordinate, teach, or contribute to some of the following courses/programmes:

  • Concurrency & Parallel Computing
  • Calculus and numerical methods
  • Introduction to Computational Science
  • Scientific Computing
  • Guest lectures in various MSc. or AUC courses
  • Courses from the minor Computational Science

The teaching load is around 30%, which translates to teaching at least two courses, guest lecturing, and supervising Ba and Ma students in their thesis projects.

The tenure tracker is expected to contribute to valorisation, including engaging with the media, translating research outcomes to society or industry, or UvA spinoff activities.

Finally, the tenure tracker is expected to contribute to the management of the Computational Science Lab and the Informatics Institute.

Requirements

The candidate’s research interests and expertise should fall within the general area of Computational Science and Scientific Computing, and in particular in multiscale modelling & computing pushed forward by computing needs in application areas such as biomedicine. Candidates must hold a doctorate in Computational or Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related areas. A strong track record in research is essential, as demonstrated by independent scientific publications in peer reviewed journals. Candidates should be able to obtain research funding in a competitive environment. In addition, candidates must have a proven track record of teaching abilities as well as the ability to supervise MSc and PhD candidates. At least two years of postdoctoral experience is expected but not strictly necessary. International research experience is also preferred.

Conditions of employment

The vacancy is for a permanent position according to standard university policies. It is a temporary appointment with a tenure track agreement which will lead to tenured position for a period of 5 years during which the candidate should show his/her competence in science and teaching/education. In the fifth year of the appointment, the tenure decision will be made. This implies that experienced scientists will be offered a permanent position after a positive assessment and evaluation. The type of appointment is negotiable and depends on age, experience and scientific profile of the selected candidate. The Committee will make an offer depending on the vacancy and the experience and track record of the candidate.

The gross monthly salary of the assistant professor position (UD 2/UD 1) will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €3,475 up to a maximum of €5,405 (salary scale 11/12), based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications and on the number of years of professional experience. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

There are also secondary benefits, such as 8% holiday allowance per year and the end of year allowance of 8.3%.

Among other things, we offer:

  • competitive pay and good benefits;
  • top-50 University worldwide;
  • extremely friendly, interactive and international working environment;
  • direct access to high-end computing facilities;
  • new building located near the city center (10 minutes by bicycle) of one of Europe’s most beautiful and lively cities.

English is the working language within the Informatics Institute. Moreover, since Amsterdam is a very international city where almost everybody speaks and understands English, you need not be afraid of the language barrier.

Employer

University of Amsterdam

With over 5,000 employees, 30,000 students and a budget of more than 600 million euros, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is an intellectual hub within the Netherlands. Teaching and research at the UvA are conducted within seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Housed on four city campuses in or near the heart of Amsterdam, where disciplines come together and interact, the faculties have close links with thousands of researchers and hundreds of institutions at home and abroad.

The UvA’s students and employees are independent thinkers, competent rebels who dare to question dogmas and aren’t satisfied with easy answers and standard solutions. To work at the UvA is to work in an independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterised by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society.

Department

Informatics Institute

The Faculty of Science holds a leading position internationally in its fields of research and participates in a large number of cooperative programs with universities, research institutes and businesses. The faculty has a student body of around 6,000 and 1,500 members of staff, spread over eight research institutes and a number of faculty-wide support services. A considerable part of the research is made possible by external funding from Dutch and international organizations and the private sector. The Faculty of Science offers thirteen Bachelor's degree programs and eighteen Master’s degree programs in the fields of the exact sciences, computer science and information studies, and life and earth sciences.

Since September 2010, the whole faculty has been housed in a brand new building at the Science Park in Amsterdam. The instalment of the faculty has made the Science Park one of the largest centres of academic research in the Netherlands.

The Informatics Institute is one of the large research institutes with the faculty, with a focus on complex information systems divided in four broad themes: Artificial Intelligence, Computational Science, Data Science en Systems and Network Engineering. We have a prominent international standing and are active in a dynamic scientific area, with a strong innovative character and an extensive portfolio of externally funded projects.

The tenure track position at the assistant professor level will be within the Computational Science Lab (CSL) at the Institute for Informatics (IvI) of the Faculty of Science (FNWI) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). CSL is led by Prof. Alfons Hoekstra and also includes Prof. Peter Sloot, Prof. Drona Kandhai, Dr Jaap Kaandorp, Dr Mike Lees, Dr Rick Quax, and Dr Valeria Krzhizhanovskaya as well as around 25 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Other groups within IvI doing research relevant for this position include the Systems and Network Engineering group (led by Prof. Cees de Laat) and the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (led by Prof. Max Welling). Prof Sloot is also the scientific director of the Institute for Advanced Study of the UvA, which forms an important part of the research ecosystem for this position.
