Job description

The Section Economics at Wageningen University has pronounced a joint interest in research on urban health economics in developed and developing countries.

The share of the world population living in urban areas has grown extensively in the past decades, as cities offer possibilities for life, such as jobs, housing, health care, education and social activities. However, urbanization has also been associated with adverse health effects, due to common problems such as air and noise pollution, and crime and violence. According to the World Health Organization, people who live in a city are at higher risk of non-communicable diseases and injuries, and more often suffer from alcohol and drug abuse. Moreover, urban inequities are persistent in both developed and developing countries, as the poorest people in a city are often the most exposed to bad environmental conditions and low food and nutrition security.

In line with the 'Global One Health' concept we want to look at cities (and their hinterland) as a system in which health is connected to the physical environment, society and (regional) food systems.

The Section Economics consists of five chair groups: Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy, Development Economics, Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, Rural and Environmental History and Urban Economics. Urban health will be a cross cutting theme to the Section. Therefore, the role of the post-doc will be to initiate joint research among the economic chair groups on urban health related issues and to take the lead in writing research proposals. Also cooperation with other social and environmental chair groups at Wageningen University will be important.
