Job description

This PhD position is sponsored by the centre of expertise Customer Insights Center, see: https://www.rug.nl/cic/ of the Faculty of Economics and Business. Therefore the PhD candidate will be able to closely work with leading Dutch companies. In this broadly defined project we look for students who are interested in big data as a general topic. Thereby, one could focus more on the analytics of big data and the application of new computer science techniques with a specific focus on the privacy consequences (i.e. fewer data). However, one could also take a more strategic focus and look at how firms aim to benefit from big data analytics.
Firms and institutions gather more and more data constantly. This has resulted in what is now called big data. Typically this involves huge volumes of data with different data sources and types of data (i.e. structured vs. unstructured). Firms analyse these data to create value for the firm and their customers. They do though have several challenges. For example, how should they analyse these data? How should they approach big data and how should they organize big data analytics? How should they deal with privacy issues that may lead to fewer data and less detailed data?
The project will be embedded in SOM’s research programme in Marketing, see” https://www.rug.nl/research/marketing/
