Job description

Chemical Engineering and Chemistry

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry provides academic education and research at the highest international standards. Staff develop technology and scientific knowledge, thereby meeting long-term societal needs. Scientific curiosity and new insights in the department's field are the points of departure for constant improvement of its areas of expertise in the two thematic clusters Molecular Systems & Materials Chemistry and Chemical & Process Technology. The department was founded in 1957, and has some 500 staff members, 14 full-time professors, 470 Bachelor's and Master's students, 50 Post-Master's students and 190 doctoral candidates.

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)

TU/e is a leading international university of technology specializing in Engineering Science & Technology. Through excellent teaching and research we contribute to progress in the technical sciences, to the development of technological innovations, and as a result to the growth of prosperity and welfare in the region and beyond. TU/e maintains close links with industry, healthcare and the building and logistics sectors.

Project description

'System modelling and integration and reactor modelling of the IAPUNIT process'

As a first step all the required information for the separate process steps (desulphurisation, reformer, CO clean-up, fuel cell, balance-of-plant) will be collected from partners. Then a process model needs to be set up by applying ASPEN software as a first step. As part of the process optimisation procedure, the heat management of the whole process has to be be considered, which aims at high system efficiency and energy utilization at minimum system complexity and cost. Static and dynamic ASPEN models need to be set up to evaluate and optimise the process efficiency and the start-up and dynamic behaviour during load changes. Selected reactors will be modelled by CFD simulations to gain detailed insight into their performance. Utilising experimental data from the partners gathered in the course of the project, the process and reactor models will be validated.

Project background

The IAPUNIT project aims at the development on a fuel cell Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) based on fuel processing of sulphur containing (logistic) diesel fuel as hydrogen source for a high temperature PEM fuel cell. The project is a collaborative project with partners from all over Europe and strong industrial involvement which is funded by the European Defense Agency (EDA). The current first phase of the project deals with the development and testing of a proof-of-concept bread board system including desulphurization, fuel processor and fuel cell. TU Eindhoven is responsible for the static and dynamic (ASPEN) simulation of the overall process and the related sub-processes, the optimization of the heat management, the simulation and optimization of start-up strategies and the (CFD) simulation of selected individual reactors and components. A continuation of the project in a second phase is envisaged by the partners after the end of the current period with the aim to develop a second, advanced and integrated prototype of the APU system.
