Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) invites excellent (postdoctoral) researchers to apply for a Tenure track position in Mathematics and Computer Science for Life Sciences and Health

Job description

The CWI Life Sciences and Health (LSH) group is a group of computer scientists and mathematicians who have their research focus on the analysis and design of models and algorithms and their direct application to important challenges in the LSH domain.

Our present research team of computer scientists and mathematicians has expertise in e.g. computational genomics, medical informatics, computational phylogenetics and biological network analysis. We come from diverse methodological backgrounds, such as computational intelligence, computational data science and operations research. Methodologically, we develop new theories, models, algorithms and decision support tools, mostly for problems arising in collaboration with experimental biologists and medical experts. We also actively collaborate in projects with academic hospitals, biological and biochemical research institutes and industry.

Job description

We are looking for a researcher with an excellent track record in computer science or mathematics with clear affinity for and experience with applications in the LSH domain. The candidate is expected to establish a highly visible and successful research program, strengthening existing research lines or establishing new ones that broadly fit within the group’s focus. In general, we are keen on strengthening our expertise in models and algorithms for dealing with modern-day big data challenges in the LSH domain, ranging from machine learning, to optimization and data structures and indexing. LSH-topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to biomedical data science, network (personalized) medicine, large and diverse biological networks, and decision support systems for medical experts.

Besides the LSH group, CWI houses a rich variety of other (usually methodologically oriented) research groups, with whom the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate. For working on relevant applications the  candidate is prepared to actively seek cooperation with experimentally oriented life scientists and medical experts.

The candidate is expected to publish in high impact journals and in proceedings of top-rated conferences, to obtain funding for additional research positions, and to recruit and supervise PhD students as well as junior researchers.

Candidates should have a very good command of English and excellent communication skills. Candidates should also should have post-doctoral experience of at least two years, that demonstrates their capacity to meet the requirements of the job.

CWI expects its tenure track researchers to speak Dutch at the end of the tenure track.

Conditions of employment

The position is for three or five years depending on knowledge and experience of the candidate. At the end of a successful tenure track term a permanent scientific staff position will be offered. Criteria for evaluation comprise a list of publications that is well above average, a demonstrated ability to acquire funding, supervised post docs/PhD student and researchers in training and to build an (inter)national network and reputation.
