The Department of Archaeological Sciences of the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University has a vacancy for an Assistant Professor in Archaeozoology (1.0 FTE) .

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching specific core courses on the undergraduate and graduate levels at the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University. These core courses (which are lecture and laboratory based) cover a broad range of topics and themes in archaeozoology. However, the successful candidate also will be encouraged to incorporate their own area of specialization into these courses – research-led teaching is a goal. It will be expected that you also participates in fieldwork and archaeological excavations and uses this activity as a platform to enhance teaching. You will contribute to the supervision of theses within the BA, MSc, RMSc and PhD programs.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is required to establish an active research program leading to peer-reviewed publications, to acquire external funding and to disseminate research results to the wider academic audience and the public.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for administrative and management tasks related to the running of the Archaeozoology Laboratory. The candidate should be a team player who is able to fit into and work in a multidisciplinary team. Finally, you will be expected to contribute to the running of the faculty by participating in administrative tasks, commensurate with experience and level of appointment.

Requirements

  • The department is seeking candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching and research, and whose research interests intersect both the Natural and Social Sciences in understanding past human societies;
  • Excellent command of English. If the applicant does not speak Dutch, he/she will be expected to acquire a good command of Dutch for practical matters within two years from taking up duty;
  • PhD in archaeology with a focus on archaeozoology or PhD in biology with a focus on archaeology;
  • At least two years of experience in teaching and research in Quaternary archaeozoology with an excellent publication record demonstrating an active interest in both the Pleistocene and Holocene periods;
  • A demonstrable broad knowledge of archaeozoological material from Eurasia, with a clear affinity with the mammalian faunas of Europe;
  • Clear interest in and understanding of taphonomic processes, (palaeo)ecology, hominin/human subsistence, and/or biomolecular studies;
  • A successful track record of obtaining research funding from national and international grant agencies;
  • Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, you must be willing to obtain it within two years.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

We offer a six year term position. The possibility of renewal will be discussed after an evaluation in the fifth year. Salary range from €3,475 to €5,405 gross per month (pay scale 11 or 12 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Pay scale depends on education, experience and level of appointment. The position is available as of 1 January 2018.
