Faculty of Humanities, Leiden Institute for Area Studies is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Egyptian Texts & Transmission (1.0 FTE).

Job description

  • Undertake research on the transmission of texts and decoration from Old Kingdom, New Kingdom and Late Period tombs at Saqqara, with the main focus on the tombs found in the Leiden-Turin mission;
  • Active participation of all meetings, conferences and workshops of the project;
  • Active participation in the field work at the Leiden-Turin mission is desirable.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Egyptology with a specialisation in the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead (in hand before 1 January, 2018);
  • A research and publication record that is commensurate with the career stage and a demonstrated interest in theory and method of religious studies, social studies, or literary studies;
  • Affinity with area studies, and the ability to work from different interdisciplinary, theoretical, and comparative perspectives;
  • The ability to engage with broader issues of scholarship, and to position the study of the texts in their wider context;
  • Excellent time management skills and the demonstrated ability to meet deadlines;
  • An excellent command of Old, Middle and Late Egyptian;
  • Willingness and ability to work on a team;
  • Fluency in English (speaking and writing).      

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.

We offer a position for 38 hours per week, from 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2018. With a possible extension of another two years to a total of 3 years. Salary range, depending on education and work experience, from €2,588 to €4,084 (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) gross per month, based on a full-time appointment.
