Job description

A post-doctoral position is available within the ten Dijke Laboratorium in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at Leiden University Medical Center. You will join a project which is part of a strong national multidisciplinary network that includes complementary laboratories with expertise in appropriate animal disease models, early stage translational clinical research and access to clinical material from patients. Applications from individuals with a strong interest in biochemistry and who can work creatively, independently and in multidisciplinary team are encouraged.

Specifications

Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC)

Requirements

We are searching for a talented post-doctoral scientist holding a recent PhD degree, with drive to answer important fundamental and biomedical research questions. The post-doc should have a strong background in biochechemistry and molecular cell biology. A background in protein homeostasis and experience with biochemical and cell based assays to investigate protein degradation through the ubiquitin proteasome system would be a plus.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: for the duration of the project.

You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. The appointment is for the duration of the project (2 years) with the possibility for extension. Your salary will depend on your qualifications and experience with a maximum of € 4,152 gross per month based on a full time position (scale 10, CLA for University Hospitals).

The terms of employment offered by the LUMC are highly favorable. For example, you will receive 8% holiday remuneration, a year-end bonus, and a pension arrangement with the National Civil Pension Fund. Also, as employee of one of the University Hospitals in the Netherlands, you can benefit from our collective health insurance policy.

Moreover, the LUMC offers excellent facilities in the area of education, child-care centers, and career advice.

Department

Molecular Cell Biology

The project

The project focusses on TGF-β and BMP signaling in cardiovascular diseases. Genetic screens have identified multiple E3 ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinating enzymes that control the stability of TGF-β and BMP receptors. In addition, we are investigating the therapeutic potential of targeting the ubiquitin proteasome system with small inhibitory molecules. The position entails studies on elucidating the mechanism of action of E3 ligases and deubiquitinating enzymes that control the stability, intracellular trafficking and function of BMP type II receptor.

 The department

The Department of Molecular Cell Biology (MCB) aims to perform curiosity-driven basic research for the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the function and activity of cells and tissues; the unravelling of the molecular defects that form the basis of inherited and acquired disease; making this knowledge and related technology emanating from this research available to others for improved diagnosis or to develop novel treatment modalities. Advances in this research field highly depend on continuing progress in methodology and technical innovation. Besides performing basic research MCB therefore also develops tailor-made technology to support its own basic research lines. In addition, it creates and maintains an optimal infrastructure in terms of equipment and facilities, for own use and to support other LUMC departments.
