Job description

The position:
The candidate’s work will be part of the European H2020 funded project EUCP – European Climate Prediction System. This is a 4 year collaborative project with 16 European partners of leading climate prediction institutions. The overarching objective is to develop an innovative European regional ensemble climate prediction system based on a new generation of improved and typically high spatial resolution climate models, covering timescales from seasons to decades, and designed to support practical and strategic climate adaptation and mitigation decision-taking on local, national and global scales.

Scientific background of the position:
The candidate will contribute to development of a distributed data infrastructure where climate model data can be ingested and will be made accessible to scientists. The data access will be complemented with a flexible data analytics framework where climate model data can be inspected, combined with other environmental or socio-economic data and further processed and analyzed. The system should allow for preservation of the workflows. The candidate will also contribute to training sessions on research software and data access and analysis for both specialists and less experienced users of climate data.

Requirements

  • Academic level;
  • Finished master degree or PhD in data science, computer science, or equivalent study;
  • Experience with different programming languages (Python, Fortran, C and/or C++);
  • Experience with data infrastructures;
  • Knowledge on modern software tools such as Docker, Apache Spark and Jupyter;
  • Good writing skills in English;
  • Knowledge of a scientific area related to climate research is an asset.

Competences:

  • Motivated, flexible, creative, initiative taking, independent but also a real team player.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.

We offer a position at the eScience Center for a fixed period of 3 years within the collective agreement for Dutch Research Institutes (cao-OI). The candidate will be based at the Netherlands eScience Center in Amsterdam.

Classification is based on education and experience with salary depending on qualifications and experience, starting from € 2.620,- up to € 4.848,- gross per month, with a 38-hour working week (salary scale 10-11). Holiday pay amounts to 8% of the gross salary and we also offer a 13th month of salary as an end-of-year payment.
