Functiebeschrijving

Biological nanopores are an exciting new class of biosensors, which main practical application is in single-molecule sequencing and single-molecule analysis. We are looking for talented and motivated students that are willing to engage in a PhD program in any of the following subjects:

DE NOVO DESIGN OF NANOPORES. In collaboration with the Molecular Dynamics Group at the University of Groningen the candidate will use molecular dynamic simulations in combination with advanced chemical and biochemical techniques to design nanopores with targeted diameter, shape and function.

PROTEIN SEQUENCING. As part of a consortium that includes researchers from Delft and Wageningen, the candidate will develop, engineer and re-design biological nanopores that will allow the sequence identifications of proteins as they are translocated across a nanopore. This will be the first technology that will be able to identify and sequence proteins at the single-molecule level.

SINGLE-MOLECULE ENZYMOLOGY. Small enzymes will be immobilized inside a biological nanopore either genetically, via Disulfide Bridge, by click chemistry or by non-covalent interactions. The conformational changes associated with catalysis will then be observed by the altered ionic flow through the nanopore.

Functie-eisen

The candidate should hold a Masters Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology or equivalent.

Expertise in molecular biology (recombinant DNA techniques, protein expression and purification), chemical modification of proteins or peptides, MD simulations will be an advantage, but is not a limiting factor.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The University of Groningen offers a salary of €2,222 gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 2,840 gross per month in the fourth and final year, based on a fulltime position, excluding a 8% holiday allowance and a 8.3% end-of-the-year bonus.
The position is limited to a period of 4 years. The first year constitutes a probationary period, with an evaluation of the candidate’s performance after 9 months. The objective of this evaluation is to establish whether the candidate will be able to finish a PhD thesis in the remaining three years. If the performance evaluation is positive, the candidate’s contract will be extended by another 3 years, for a total of 4 years.

How to apply
You may apply for this position until 15 January 23:59 h / before 16 January 2018 Dutch local time by means of the application form (click on "Apply" below on the advertisement on the university website).

Applications for the position should include:
- curriculum vitae (name, address, degree(s) with transcript(s) of grades, research experience, educational and employment history, etc.) Please include the University and GPA of your BSc and MSc, as well as any awards, distinctions, and publications within the body of your email
- motivation letter
- name and (email) address of three academic references.

The preferred starting date will be as soon as possible.
