Job description

An ERA-net funded postdoctoral fellowship is available at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands). Project: Synthesising greenhouse gas fluxes and their controls in peatlands affected by agricultural drainage and rewetting to evaluate the effectiveness of climate mitigation methods on peat soils.

Your work will include (1) quantifying greenhouse gas emissions from temperate peatlands affected by agricultural drainage and rewetting, (2) modelling the temporal and spatial variability of greenhouse gas emissions, (3) determining the biotic and abiotic regulatory factors and their relationships with greenhouse gas fluxes, and (4) synthesising greenhouse gas flux data (from project partners) and improving methods to quantify/validate the efficiency of climate mitigation in drained and rewetted peatlands. If you want, you may add new components to this project. The data used for the modelling work is predominantly collected using static chamber measurement (LGR Ultraportable GHG analyser or GC). While the focus of your work is on synthesising flux data including flux literature you are welcome to join the ongoing gas flux campaigns in the traditional Dutch countryside. Team spirit is a must as you will be joining the Peatwise project, involving regular meetings and joint research tasks in international teams of postdocs and PhD students from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Finland and New Zealand.

Employer

Radboud University

Strategically located in Europe, Radboud University is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. A place with a personal touch, where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful green campus in modern buildings with state-of-art facilities.

Department

Faculty of Science

The Institute for Water and Wetland Research (IWWR) aims to understand the responses of the natural environment to human impact. Biologists and environmental scientists focus on stress and adaptation processes, particularly in aquatic ecosystems and wetlands. This fundamental research is cross-linked to innovative applications in both industry and society.

The department of Aquatic Ecology and Environmental Biology focuses on key factors and processes explaining the functioning, diversity and services of wetlands (and also drylands) in a changing world. The ecological and biogeochemical drivers of ecosystem functioning are studied at different spatial scales, using a combination of biogeochemical, microbiological, ecophysiological, community ecological and landscape ecological approaches.
