Job description

One of the major challenges LCA practitioners are regularly faced with is a lack of inventory data. A particular and relevant case of lack of data is the assessment of emerging technologies. New technologies are generally developed in the laboratory and in pilot installations. Potential environmental effects identified for these stages are unlikely to be good representations of the environmental assessment and comparison of technologies in the early development stages (innovations), which account for differences between lab data and large-scale implementation in a scientifically sound way. These guidelines should take into account size scaling effects as well as technological learning and uncertainties arising from the use of different processes and materials in labs versus industrial production.

The PhD project is funded by the Netherlands organisation for applied scientific research TNO and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Department

Faculty of Science

As a PhD Candidate you will be appointed at the Department of Environmental Science, which is embedded in the Institute for Water and Wetland Research, Faculty of Science. The main focus of the Environmental Science group is on quantifying, understanding and predicting human impacts on the environment. To that end, we employ a variety of research methods, including process-based modelling, meta-analyses, field studies and lab work. In our research we cover multiple stressors, species and spatial scales, searching for overarching principles that can ultimately be applied to better underpin environmental management and biodiversity conservation.

Department of Climate, Air and Sustainability (TNO)
The Department of Climate, Air and Sustainability has three focus areas: 1) Energy planning and greenhouse gas (and other air pollutant) emissions 2) Air quality modelling and 3) sustainability which is generally approached from a life cycle perspective. Our life cycle expertise is centred around the chemical industry and infrastructures. We work closely together with technological research departments and companies.
TNO’s mission and driving force is to connect people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the sustainable competitive strength of industry and well-being of society.
