Cost-effective technology for water purification in cooperation with Vitens

Job description

Groundwater is our main source of drinking water. Abstracted groundwater often contains iron, manganese, and ammonia. These constituents are generally removed by a treatment method involving aeration and subsequent Rapid Sand Filtration (RSF). In addition to these above-ground technologies, Subsurface Iron Removal (SIR) could be used. SIR boils down to the injection of a volume of oxygenated water and subsequent extraction of a larger volume of water with a lower iron concentration than that found in native groundwater. The ambition of this project is to increase understanding of SIR and optimisation of SIR. This includes the use of models that could predict and asses the effects of changing process conditions. A business case should include the beneficial effect of SIR on the subsequent RSF and should answer questions about sustainability and safety.

The activities will mainly take place at the TU Delft and at the Vitens headquarters in Zwolle. At Vitens you will become part of an experienced team of drinking water professionals.

Your responsibilities include:
• Writing a project proposal
• Conducting research into SIR, modelling SIR, developing new SIR concepts and writing a business case
• Following and completing the courses offered by the TU Delft
• Communicating with Vitens and the TU Delft
• Attending and/or organising information sessions and workshops.
