The Department of the Built Environment invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in the Chair of Structural Design of Concrete Structures within the unit Structural Design. The assistant professorship is a tenure track position, related to 3D printing of concrete, that includes teaching, research, valorization and administrative duties.

Job description

The unit Structural Design (SD) of the Department of the Built Environment is a leading research and educational institute in the field of structural engineering in the built environment.

The chair of Structural Design of Concrete Structures develops the technology of 3D concrete printing for structural applications in the built environment. The print process is simulated for reasons of predictability and the structural properties of printed concrete and printed concrete components are modelled and tested experimentally. Customized, non-destructive test methods are developed to meet the demands of this new material, during and after the print process. Examples of present projects are the modelling of the failure behavior of fresh concrete during the print session, the development of new test methods to characterize the properties of fresh concrete as well as the bond strength between the filaments, the improvement of the structural performance by means of the inclusion of fibers and reinforcement already during the print process, and the design and testing of structural joints between prefabricated components. The purpose of the research is to understand and improve the structural nature of printed concrete and to define test methods to characterize the performance.

The assistant professor position that is offered focuses on the experimental research related to 3D concrete printing, including the operation of our large-scale gantry robot and industrial robot. Due to many similarities, you will also collaborate closely and participate actively in experimental research in masonry structures.

As an assistantprofessor, you will contribute to achieving the educational and research objectives of the chair of Structural Design of Concrete Structures and support in research on masonry structures. You will participate in the teaching of courses and the supervision of MSc and PhD students. You will be involved in the writing of research proposals and the acquisition of external funds to strengthen current and new research initiatives in the chair. You will pursue strategic internal and external collaborations, and publish your research results in high-quality scientific journals.
