Job description

The Informatics Institute of the Faculty of Science is seeking a PhD candidate or Postdoctoral researcher in Machine Learning & Deep Learning. 

The PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher will perform cutting edge research in AMLAB in the field of deep learning applied to medical imaging. The research topic is 'Transfer, Multitask & Multimodal Learning for Medical Data Sets' (e.g. how can we learn with multiple input modalities, how can we optimize multiple tasks simultaneously to improve data efficiency, how can we transfer representations between tasks, how can we use unlabeled data?). Data and use cases will be provided by Philips Research Netherlands.

Three more PhD researchers in deep learning for medical imaging have started, forming a research lab in deep learning for medical imaging. The candidate is expected to collaborate with (if a PhD student) or lead (if a postdoctoral researcher) this group. Collaborations with other research labs in medical imaging in the Netherlands are also in place.

PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers funded by Philips are required to spend about half of their time at Philips Research in Eindhoven. We anticipate that during the first years of the PhD more time is spend at UvA while towards the end of the thesis more time is spend at Philips.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to co-supervise the three PhD candidates already working on deep learning for medical imaging the Lab.

Requirements

  • Master degree (for PhD candidate) or PhD degree (for postdoctoral researcher) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Physics or related field;
  • excellent programming skills (the project is in Matlab, Python and C/C++);
  • solid mathematics foundations, especially statistics, calculus and linear algebra;
  • highly motivated;
  • fluent in English, both written and spoken;
  • proven experience with machine learning (Postdoctoral researcher);
  • leadership abilities (Postdoctoral researcher).

Preferred starting date is March 2018.

PhD candidate

The appointment for the PhD candidates will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD student is also expected to assist in teaching of bachelor and master students. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,222 in the first year to €2,840 in the last year. There are also secondary benefits, such as 8% holiday allowance per year and the end of year allowance of 8.3%. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

Postdoctoral researcher

The appointment of the postdoctoral researcher will be full-time (38 hours a week) for two years (initial employment is 12 months and after a positive evaluation, the appointment will be extended further with 12 months). The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,588 up to a maximum of €4,757 (scale 10/11) based on a full-time appointment depending on qualifications, expertise and on the number of years of professional experience. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable. There are also secondary benefits, such as 8% holiday allowance per year and the end of year allowance of 8.3%.
