Job description

An aquatic ecologist (both marine and inland waters) with strong quantitative and analytical background willing to contribute to sustainable resource exploitation in balance with the marine ecosystem. Wageningen Marine Research carries out applied research into this societal issue and in doing so, works closely with other scientific institutes, private companies, policy makers and other stakeholders. Large datasets and extensive knowledge of various ecosystem components (including fish, benthic invertebrates or marine mammals) and human activities (including fisheries, wind farms or shipping) are the scientific basis to provide advice on the sustainable use of our aquatic (marine or freshwater) resources. We are looking for a researcher with a solid quantitative background who can contribute to actively expand the knowledgebase within the institute.

Requirements

An ambitious researcher with an academic qualification (at least MSc) in (aquatic/marine) Ecology, Biological- or Life Sciences, Mathematics or Engineering. A good quantitative background with training in data analysis, statistics and/or mathematics is a must, literacy in the R programming language is preferred.
You are a team player, but it is also important to be able to work independently and to take your own initiative. You are a good networker and you are able to perform well in stressful situations. This is a scientific post requiring strong analytical skills. You are familiar with developing new-, or applying existing simulation models and have experience in (statistical) analyses of large datasets.
You have experience in presenting scientific results, preparing reports and making presentations to communicate with both specialist and non-specialist audiences. You are flexible in your working hours as this job may involve meetings abroad several times a year. You have an interest to translate your applied research into peer-reviewed publications. You have good knowledge of the English and Dutch language both speaking and writing.

Conditions of employment

We offer a interesting job in which you can develop widely. In addition, you have motivated colleagues who want to complete projects together with you. You are employed by a Payroll company. It is a full-time employment with a working week of 32-36 hours depending on your wishes. The duration of the contract depends on the availability of research projects, but the appointment is for a minimum of one year. The function is valued as DLO Researcher 4 (scale 10), with a salary of up to 4174, - gross monthly depending on knowledge and experience and at a 36-hour working week. Workstation is IJmuiden.
