Job description

The research program “WheelPower: wheelchair sports and data science push it to the limit” aims to improve the power output of athletes in their sport-specific wheelchair to perform better in competition. To achieve this objective the current project systematically combines the three Dutch measurement innovations (WMPM, Esseda wheelchair ergometer, PitchPerfect system) to monitor a large population of athletes from different wheelchair sports resulting in optimal power production by wheelchair athletes during competition. The data will be directly implemented in feedback tools accessible to athletes, trainers and coaches which give them the unique opportunity to adapt their training and wheelchair settings for optimal performance.
In this program we aim to identify the performance indicators for optimal power production by wheelchair athletes during competition and how they can be improved using continuous performance monitoring, combined with direct feedback.
In this program two PhD positions are available, in Delft and Groningen. The PhD position based in Delft has as objective to connect all elite wheelchair athletes to a recently developed system based on inertial sensors for the quantification of wheelchair mobility performance (the Wheelchair Mobility Performance Monitor, or WMPM) and meanwhile extend the WMPM with more athlete activity-based output, such as trunk motion and push characteristics and other physiologically relevant parameters.
We are looking for candidates with very good communication skills and fluently spoken and written English. The PhD position will include modest teaching duties. Candidates are expected to finish their project with a PhD thesis, and disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at international conferences. As close cooperation between this PhD and the PhD in Groningen is required, an assessment focusing on collaboration with the other candidate may be part of the selection procedure. A combination of this PhD position (as 0,8fte) with a separate (0,2fte) teaching position at the Department of Human Kinetic Technology of the Faculty of Applied Sciences in The Hague is possible, dependent on the candidates’ interests and background.

Requirements

The candidate possesses a MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (specialisation Sport Engineering) or Human Movement Sciences, or related discipline. The position requires experience with experimental research involving human subjects, preferably within a sports setting, even as experience in biomechanical modelling. Some experience with epidemiology, statistical modelling and handling / analysis of big data sets is advantageous as close collaboration with data scientists will be part of the project.
