Job description

Circularity can be described as an approach to fulfil the UN sustainable development goals by switching from a linear economy towards a circular economy in which waste is basically eliminated.  The Dutch Government has defined clear pathway with the nation-wide program ‘Nederland Circulair in 2050’. In practice this means that we will have to reduce material resource consumption by 50% already in 2030. The effect on the built environment is huge. It concerns not only building materials and construction but also design and building processes, procurement, legal and financial aspects of building. Ultimately it will deeply effect the role of architects through all levels from component design, architecture, urban and regional planning.

The Circular Built Environment (CBE) Hub was founded to align efforts throughout the four departments of the faculty. Around 40 staff members are concerned with the topic and currently the research portfolio included about 6,2 mill Euro on externally funded projects. This way the Faculty of Architecture has claimed national and international recognition. Within our BauHow5 network we have a leading role and we need to use the momentum in extending the competitive advantage.

Education has recently defined as one of the major pillars of the CBE Hub. It needs considerable effort to research in which way this topic should be embedded in the current educational program of the faculty. First MOOC’s and ProfEd modules are being developed by including all departments. A cross domain design studio is in discussion. Circularity could be a key ingredient of a future online MSc program.

The tenure track position will embrace architecture related design education in the field of Circularity with the aim to translate the latest knowledge in the field into education concepts.

The tenure track position will be hosted in the Department AE+T with a clear task to bridge department boundaries. It will deliver on the following key points:

  • Develop new concepts on integrating circular approach to building design in education;
  • Especially the relation to ongoing activities in practice are of interest;
  • Become responsible member for education of the CBE Hub;
  • Combine ongoing research with education activities;
  • Acquire funding on education related topics;
  • Apply new teaching concepts such as effectively blending studio education with online learning;
  • Explore the possibilities of Life Long Learning concepts that include professionals.

Department

Faculty Architecture & the Built Environment

The faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has a leading role in education and research worldwide. The driving force behind the faculty’s success is its robust research profile combined with the passion and creativity of its student body and academic community. It is a place that is buzzing with life from early in the morning until late at night, with four thousand people studying, working, designing, conducting research and acquiring and disseminating knowledge. Academics and students have been working on improving the built environment with the help of a broad set of disciplines, including architectural design, urban planning, building technology, social sciences, process management, and geo-information science. The faculty works closely with other faculties, universities, private parties, and the public sector, and has an extensive network in the Netherlands as well as internationally.

The department of Architectural Engineering + Technology is positioned between ‘traditional’ civil engineering and architectural design disciplines. Architectural Engineering and Technology connects both extremes, but more than this, it forms the new core of design for the built environment of the future, with sensitivity for aesthetics, health, heritage, sustainability, biodiversity and other values, and with sufficient technical knowledge to enable innovation in numerous fields.

The Chair of Building Product Innovation will focus on the conceptualisation and design of novel building products. The novelty of these products may lie in the uniqueness of the concept, in the novel use of materials, and in the use of novel materials.Proper understanding of modern means of production and manufacturing (such as CNC production technology, additive manufacturing, use of robotics) and of (de)construction and (dis)assembly (such as stacking techniques, dry-montage, dismantling) is an essential boundary condition. Special attention is paid to circularity: building products should be renewable, reusable and recyclable.
