Job description

There is an urgent societal need to make the transition towards a sustainable energy system. This will amongst others affect how our buildings will be heated, cooled and ventilated and will imply a change towards low temperature heating and high temperature cooling systems. This transition will therefore have a large impact on how the existing building stock will be transformed to become future proof and how new buildings will have to be conceived. It will be interesting to investigate how this will impact the architecture of these buildings if we adopt more passive – smart and bioclimatic - climate design strategies relying to a large extent on daylight, solar energy and natural ventilation.

The new tenure track position (assistant professor), placed within the chair of Building Physics & Services, will focus on the building physical properties and building services needs of buildings that are ready for a future energy system; both concerning refurbished and new buildings. Emphasis will be on daylight, passive solar design, natural ventilation and energy use. The tenure tracker will play an important role in BSc and MSc climate design education (design courses) and will give lectures and individual tutoring on the mentioned subject (including lectures and tutoring on daylight) to prepare our students for the challenge ahead. Moreover, this person should be a bridge between different departments connecting engineering with architecture and urban design within the larger challenge of the 1M homes needed until 2030. Finally, the tenure tracker will participate in research, develop own original research and (co-)author scientific publications.

Department

Faculty Architecture & the Built Environment

The faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has a leading role in education and research worldwide. The driving force behind the faculty’s success is its robust research profile combined with the passion and creativity of its student body and academic community. It is a place that is buzzing with life from early in the morning until late at night, with four thousand people studying, working, designing, conducting research and acquiring and disseminating knowledge. Academics and students have been working on improving the built environment with the help of a broad set of disciplines, including architectural design, urban planning, building technology, social sciences, process management, and geo-information science. The faculty works closely with other faculties, universities, private parties, and the public sector, and has an extensive network in the Netherlands as well as internationally.

The department of  Architectural Engineering + Technology is positioned between ‘traditional’ civil engineering and architectural design disciplines. Architectural Engineering and Technology connects both extremes, but more than this, it forms the new core of design for the built environment of the future, with sensitivity for aesthetics, health, heritage, sustainability, biodiversity and other values, and with sufficient technical knowledge to enable innovation in numerous fields.

The chair of Building Physics & Services is led by prof. Peter Luscuere. The chair is part of the section Environmental & Computational Design. Its mission is to play a key role in scientific research, academic education and in knowledge dissemination concerning:

• the passive and active design and realisation of comfortable, healthy and climate-proof built environments (indoors and outdoors), within the framework of positive footprints for energy, water, air, materials, food and biomass;
• the development and application of design, performance assessment and analysis methods, techniques and tools.
