The Department of Neuropsychology and Psychopharmacology is seeking an Assistant Professor who could further strengthen our teaching and research activities. The department distinguishes 2 research programs that aim to assess cognitive function and human performance from a neuropsychological as well as a psychopharmacological perspective (for more information, please see below). In terms of teaching, the department is coordinating a Master program in Neuropsychology; Research Master programs in Drug Development and Neurohealth and a Research Master program in Neuropsychology. The Assistant Professor is explicitly asked to contribute to our flagship research and education programs.

Eligible candidates should have experience with and passion for teaching in our education programs. Teaching skills should match our small-scale student-centered Problem Based Learning program. The candidate also has a strong background in research on biological mechanisms and (preferably pharmacological) intervention models in individuals with mental and/or behavioral problems.

The research interests and experience of the candidate should preferably be aligned with, or complement, our existing research lines within the department. Recent publications (as a first author) in peer-reviewed, high impact journals in the relevant research areas should reflect the research interest. The candidate should have 2-4 year post-doc experience, and preferably have been successful in acquiring (personal) research grants. Also, the candidate should have obtained (or is willing to) the University Teaching Qualification.

Tasks

We also expect that the candidate supervises individual student research projects at Bachelor and Master level, and co-supervises PhD students.

The candidate communicates research findings in scientific journals and at international conferences. We expect that (s)he contributes to the acquisition of external research funding that strengthens the Department’s research profile.

• PhD degree in a relevant subject area, ideally with a specialization in Psychopharmacology and/or (Clinical) Neuropsychology;
• 2-4 years of relevant post-doc experience following PhD graduation;
• Enthusiastic teacher in the field of Psychology and preferably demonstrable teaching qualities (a Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), a similar qualification, or willingness to obtain this qualification);
• Has experience in coordinating teaching modules (e.g., courses, skill training);
• High quality and constant level of research publications in international, peer- reviewed journals;
• Demonstrable success in acquiring research grants.

Fixed-term contract: 10 years (tenure track)

Initially, candidates are employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, candidates will be evaluated and if the development goals have been met, promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

Department of Neuropsychology and Psychopharmacology

The department is internationally recognized and has an outstanding track record in Education and Research. Our Psychopharmacological research focuses on the cognitive, behavioral, and biological effects of various substances, ranging from pharmaceutical to recreational drugs. Our Neuropsychological research lines encompass: Lifespan psychology with particular emphasis on perception, action, cognition, learning and their neuroplasticity and rehabilitation of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. We utilize all modern neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, MRS, M/EEG, TMS) as well as behavioral methods. The Department of Neuropsychology and Psychopharmacology is responsible for two Research Master Programs (Neuropsychology and Drug Development and NeuroHealth) and one Master Program (Neuropsychology), which continuously attracts highly motivated and outstanding national and international students. We also engage in teaching within the Bachelor Program of Psychology and other programs at Maastricht University.
