Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher / lecturer who contributes to philosophy of economics research that connects to the work of Jan Tinbergen.

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:

·         Conduct original research in the philosophy of economics, broadly construed;

·         Relate research in the philosophy of economics to the work of Jan Tinbergen (for instance, economic expertise, methodological underpinnings of econometrics, welfare economics or measurement of utility, or the methodology of development economics, economics and global societal challenges, to name but some possibilities);

·         Develop the research theme “Jan Tinbergen: the thinker” together with researchers at the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics (EIPE), the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE), and the interdisciplinary Erasmus Initiative “Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity”;

·         Disseminate the research at international and Dutch academic events;

·         Co-organise events and disseminate the research in the public and policy domain;

·         Contribute to development and acquisition of externally funded projects;

·         Contribute to teaching courses in the philosophy of economics.

Requirements

·         A PhD in philosophy, history, economics or related discipline;

·         A developing publication record with proven excellence in a relevant discipline, such as the philosophy of science/social science/economics, history of economic thought, or economics;

·         Willingness to engage with the history of economic thought, and in particular with the work of Jan Tinbergen;

·         Ability and willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching in philosophy of economics;

·         An entrepreneurial attitude, outstanding social skills, and ability to work in teams.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 2 year.

60% of the position is to be devoted to research that contributes to the research project “Jan Tinbergen: the thinker”. 40% of the position is to be devoted to teaching in the philosophy of economics. The successful candidate is expected to start as soon as possible and will be based at ESPhil/EIPE in Rotterdam. A full-time, two-year contract with Erasmus University Rotterdam will be offered.

The research will profit from being embedded at EIPE, and in particular the on-going research on Jan Tinbergen at EIPE, notably the intellectual biography of Jan Tinbergen, authored by Erwin Dekker (to appear in 2020), and access to the Tinbergen archive including the Tinbergen letters and manuscripts.

We offer a stimulating and dynamic interdisciplinary research environment, with attractive benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at CAO NU scale 11 with a minimum of € 3.637,- and a maximum of € 4978,- gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits. In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. For international spouses we have set up a dual career programme. Moreover, EUR staff members are allowed to make use of the EUR facilities, including the Erasmus sports centre and the University Library.

Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil )

Erasmus School of Philosophy has research strengths in a number of research areas, including philosophy of economics. It offers a three-year bachelor programme in philosophy, a one-year master programme in philosophy and a two-year research master programme in philosophy and economics. Moreover, the Faculty offers a double degree (honours) undergraduate programme for students from other faculties at the Erasmus University. In total the Faculty has about 500 students and 20 staff members.

The Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics (EIPE) is one of the world’s leading research institutes in philosophy and economics. EIPE is part of ESPhil and collaborates with other EUR schools (e.g. ESE, RSM, Research Initiative Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity). The research topics covered at EIPE span all branches of philosophy and economics, including foundations of economic theory, rationality, economic methodology, and ethical aspects of economics. The graduate programmes at EIPE comprise the prestigious two-year Research Master in Philosophy and Economics and an outstanding Ph.D. programme.
