Several current CentUR research projects deal with the influence of the built environment on public health. We are looking for a PhD candidate (40 hours) with experience in GIS analysis and/or Remote Sensing to support these research projects. Additional research projects may be developed in the future, also on the candidate's own initiative.

The research is part of the Radboud Ecosystem for Active Living (REAL), a large cooperation between the Radboud university medical center (Physiology) and the Faculty of Social Science (Behavioural Science Institute), and the Space2Move research project. Core tasks may include (1) the (rudimentary) segmentation and classification of remote sensing images of natural and built environments where existing datasets are not sufficient, (2) the building of GIS models of natural and built environments, (3) qualitative validation of GIS models, and (4) using statistical analysis to explore whether specific elements of the environment correlate with aspects of physical activity and public health. The overarching goal is to help develop a GIS model for studying the spatial qualities of outdoor urban spaces in relation to health and physical activity (and potentially other themes), using data from national and local mobility panels and public health surveys. In general, we do not advocate a technology-driven research approach to spatial analysis, but rather promote a critical perspective on GIS, and look for new ways of complementing qualitative approaches with quantitative GIS and statistical analysis.

We are searching for a PhD candidate who has an affinity with the disciplines and topics described above, and the necessary experience in working with remote sensing imagery and/or GIS/Spatial Statistics. Experience with programming in Python and R is beneficial.

• An MSc in a relevant discipline (spatial planning, human geography, geo-information science).
• Academic excellence, as demonstrated by grade transcripts and CV.
• A solid understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
• Is able to undertake teaching and administrative support in parallel with the PhD research.
• Excellent command of written and spoken Dutch and English.
• The ability to work both independently and as a team player.
• The ability to finish your PhD thesis in a timely manner, i.e. strong skills in project management, flexibility, proactive behaviour and excellent academic writing skills.
• Experience with, knowledge of and affinity for GIS and/or Remote Sensing.

Fixed-term contract: you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.

• Employment: 40 hours per week.
• The gross starting salary amounts to €2,325 per month, and will increase to €2,972 in the fourth year (salary scale P).
• In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
• Duration of the contract: you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.

The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic centre of research and higher education at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands), focusing on institutional and managerial issues concerning complex organisations in both the public and private domains. It covers seven disciplines: business administration, public administration, political science, economics and business economics, environmental studies, human geography, and spatial planning. The Department of Planning, Geography, and Environment (GPE) seeks to provide a deep understandings of how places, from the local to global level, are politically and materially shaped, experienced and governed, and to contribute to the development of more sustainable and equitable places. GPE's approach goes explicitly beyond a government and policy orientation, addressing the deep political and institutional nature of placemaking and spatial-environmental governance. The group seeks to contribute to more future- oriented practices and territorial images. Located at GPE, the Centre for Urban Research (CentUR) specifically investigates specifically the relationship between urban spaces, landscape, energy, health, climate adaptation and mobility from different perspectives. We operate in cooperation with the Radboud Uuniversity Mmedical Ccentere, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and societal partners.
