Are you interested in Conservation Genomics? Do you want to develop this new field and apply novel whole-genome sequencing technology to problems in conservation biology? This vacancy is one of two tenure-track positions that the Department of Ecological Sciences is currently offering.

Job description

The successful candidate is an outstanding researcher and enthusiastic teacher who applies genomic-level data to understand how the environment has influenced diversity in populations of conservation concern. We are looking for expertise in next-generation sequencing genome analysis, population genomics, detection of genomic signatures of local adaptation and demography, and its application to research questions in the field of conservation biology, preferably applied to multiple study systems. Other areas of research expertise may include vulnerability to climate change, genomics of inbreeding, genetic load, or genomics of small endangered or captive populations.

Your duties
  • develop a vigorous, extramurally funded research program
  • teach bachelor and master level courses in evolution, evolutionary genomics, conservation biology and related subjects
  • provide high quality training and supervision to PhD-students and postdocs
  • engage in professional development activities related to teaching and academic leadership

Requirements

  • PhD in evolutionary biology or related field with at least 2 years of postdoc experience, and demonstrable skills in next-generation sequencing genome analysis and population genomics
  • strong track record of research and successful acquisition of external funding
  • demonstrated skills in activating teaching methods in BSc and MSc level courses
  • excellent communication skills (written and spoken English) and motivation to work in a team
  • proficiency in Dutch is not required, but the successful candidate would be expected to develop at least a passive proficiency in the first three years after appointment

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

We offer a tenure track position at the level of assistant professor, initially for the duration of 6 years. During the period, performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching, publication record, acquisition of project funding, and academic leadership.
After a successful evaluation permanent employment will be granted.On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,746 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,127 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 6 years, with the possibility of extension.
