Job description

Research in all disciplines involves data or source files. A safe and compliant management of these data and source files requires efficient solutions for data collection, storage and sharing internally and externally. To help with those challenges RDM team at TU/e is looking for an experienced data manager.

The Data Manager will provide hands-on, expert support for all aspects of data management for the research groups and projects at the TU/e, and in particular for the department of Mathematics and Computer Science to fulfill the researchers' actual needs in managing (and sharing) their research data.

 The Data Manager will provide support in:
  • Setting up workflows for responsible data management for a research project,
  • Providing protocols for and helping with combining, cleaning, formatting, versioning of data sets,
  • Uploading, transporting and safe guarding data,
  • Getting data ready for publishing,
  • Making data accessible in a protected environment for student and publications,
  • Managing and sharing confidential information (restricted access to data)
  • Uploading algorithms and software,
  • Software versioning,
  • Identifying and collecting publicly available data sets.

S/he will also pay particular attention to how data is structured to allow for analysis for both researchers in and outside the project or group in question. S/he will have experience, or be willing to learn how to use programming skills.

In addition, s/he will also help develop a sustainability plan for Data Managers at the university. The Data Manager will operate as a part of a team of data managers and data stewards.

The Data Manager will be part of (and report to the head of) the Research Data Management team at Data Management and Library service department. However, s/he will be seconded to the Mathematics and Computer Department based research projects.

Requirements

Required skills for candidates:
  • Have a good understanding of the role that data management play within contemporary research,
  • Have a good understanding of the rules and regulations around use and sharing data,
  • Have preferably at least a Masters in Mathematics and Computer Science, ideally with a strong data component,
  • Have experience in modelling data and setting up appropriate tools (data storage solutions for large amounts of data or streams of data, building data catalogs and databases to enable data discovery/use within the department, building data pipelines for large scale experimental facilities) to manage that data,
  • Be willing to learn about and engage with a variety of types of data and research projects,
  • Have good people and communication skills, with a good level of English,
  • Have good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills,
  • Operate within a team of Data Stewards and collaborate with other support staff (ICT, legal, privacy, etc.)

Desired skills for candidates:
  • Have skills in some combination of the following: Python, R, Matlab, GIS, SQL or NOSQL databases, SPSS, 3D CAD, OpenDap, NetCDF, Fortran, Docker, C++, GOUDA,
  • Have experience in handling confidential data,
  • Experience in a university environment and working with scientists.

Conditions of employment

You will be appointed for a one-year period on a project. Appointment via Euflex (the TU/e secondment organization) might be considered. Full-time gross salary, depending on research experience, competences and educational background, will be a minimum of € 3.807,- and a maximum of € 5.211,- (salary scale 11 CAO NU and UFO profile ICT Developer 2). The year-end allowance is 8,3% of the annual salary (corresponding to a monthly salary). The holiday allowance is 8% of the annual salary. In addition, TU/e offers excellent secondary conditions of employment (e.g. day care for children, a minimum of 41 days of leave based on a 40-hour working week and excellent sports facilities).
