Are you passionate about teaching Linguistics and do you have experience or affinity with teaching in a multidisciplinary Liberal Arts and Sciences environment? Do you also have a proven record in linguistic research? Then we may be looking for you!
University College Utrecht seeks to appoint two Assistant Professors with a broad background in linguistics and specific expertise in at least one of the following areas: logic, phonetics, rhetoric, stylistics. You are expected to contribute to teaching courses in linguistics and academic writing skills, from introductory to advanced BA level, including curriculum design and course coordination, as well as to research and scholarship within the track and beyond.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of teacher-scholars at University College Utrecht. Teaching and scholarship in the relevant cluster are centered on four disciplines: Linguistics, Philosophy, Literature, and Art History & Museum Studies. It is essential you are willing to contribute to the intellectual community of the cluster, and to teaching innovation. You are expected to collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines, also those outside your cluster. Please note that teaching, tutoring and/or fellow tasks will make up 80% of the appointment, leaving 20% for scholarship. One of the positions includes tutoring tasks.

Requirements

You have:
  • experience teaching undergraduate students in an international environment;
  • a commitment to Liberal Arts and Sciences teaching and tutoring;
  • experience or at least demonstrable affinity with teaching in a multidisciplinary setting;
  • the willingness and curiosity to teach more general courses on academic skills at BA level;
  • a PhD degree in linguistics, or you will be completing your dissertation shortly;
  • a record (appropriate to career stage) of scholarship that demonstrates the ability to conduct research at an international level and to translate this into teaching;
  • readiness to engage with a wider audience and to assist in developing the impact of linguistics research beyond the university;
  • the ability to play an appropriate role in curriculum development and to contribute fully to the academic life of the college;
  • for the position that includes tutoring: a demonstrable affinity with mentoring students;
  • an excellent command of the English language.

Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years. Non-Dutch speaking candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.

Conditions of employment

We offer a position (0.7 - 0.9 FTE) for a period of one year. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is one of the possibilities. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between € 2,846 and € 5,230 (scale 10-11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. University College Utrecht (UCU) is the international (English language) Honours College of Utrecht University in Liberal Arts and Sciences. It offers students an academic and residential setting to provide foundations for their academic and/or professional careers. Among the special characteristics of the college are its small classes and individual attention. It provides an environment that encourages intellectual exchange among students and teachers in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

UCU is a selective college of 740 students of a wide range of nationalities. The college offers 230 courses annually by about 180 teachers. An important part of the UCU education is the tutorial system, providing personal guidance to UCU students. Moreover, the UCU approach is personal: classes are small with twenty students on average. Intellectual exchange between professors and students in a friendly and informal atmosphere is actively encouraged.
