Job description

We are looking for an inspiring new faculty member to expand our academic staff in the ‘Migration, Cultural Diversity, and Ethnic Relations’ programme (ERCOMER) of the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science (ISS) of the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Utrecht University.

Your job
The programme Migration, Cultural Diversity, and Ethnic Relations is concerned with research on inclusion and exclusion of immigrants, both from the immigrant perspective as well as from origin and destination country perspectives. This includes a wide range of topics, such as group identities, intergroup attitudes, nationalism and right-wing radicalism, discrimination, immigrants’ structural, social and political inclusion, dynamics in the first years after migration, religiosity and transnationalism. We examine these questions in the general population but also in specific settings, such as in schools, neighbourhoods and organisations, drawing mostly on quantitative methods.

The position contains a standard combination of teaching activities (60%) and research activities (40%), preferably starting no later than September 2024.

The core tasks will include:
  • creating your own research programme, preferably on the topic of discrimination, polarisation or radicalisation, or another topic in the field with which you contribute expertise to the current research group;
  • performing quantitative empirical research, preferably also bringing new expertise to both the research group and into the curriculum;
  • carrying out research within the scope of the programme on Migration, Cultural Diversity, and Ethnic Relations and publishing internationally and nationally within the relevant domain;
  • translating and communicating research findings and scientific insights to different types of audiences, including scientific, professional and community audiences;
  • independently teaching Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in the curriculum of Interdisciplinary Social Science;
  • educational management, including the coordination of courses at Bachelor’s and Master’s degree level, coordinating educational (innovation) projects.
