Lecturer (D3) in Literary Cultural Analysis

Published Deadline Location
8 May 31 May Amsterdam

Job description

Due to temporary replacement, the Literary and Cultural Analysis capacity group is looking for a lecturer to teach in the BA Literary and Cultural Analysis, the MA Comparative Literature and the MA Comparative Cultural Analysis. The candidate can also be asked to teach courses in the rMA Cultural Analysis and the rMA Literary Studies. The candidate has expertise in Literary and Cultural Analysis, an interdisciplinary research field dedicated to teaching on contemporary culture, the arts, and literature at the intersection of politics and philosophy. We try to make sense of and reflect on works of literature, art, and (popular) culture in close relation to contemporary controversies and developments. We draw from and develop theories rooted in experience (gender and queer studies, disability studies, affect and memory studies), environment and world (environmental humanities, post- and decolonial studies, world literature, infrastructure studies, media archaeology) and interdisciplinary analysis (cultural studies, comparative literature, continental philosophy).

Central to our programs is the hands-on engagement – through concept-driven close readings – with concrete cultural objects from Global Norths and Global Souths: visual art; films; poems; novels; fashion; television series; art installations; social media; and performances; but also culturally significant phenomena such as social movements and environmental or technological transformations. Experience teaching ethnographic and/or community engagement methods is a plus.

You can find the full curriculums of the BA and the MA’s here: Opleiding | UvA Studiegids 2023 - 2024; Opleiding | UvA Studiegids 2023 - 2024; Opleiding | UvA Studiegids 2023 - 2024.

What are you going to do?
You will teach in a dynamic context with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods within the Literary and Cultural Analysis (LCA) capacity group within the Department of Literary Studies and Linguistics: https://www.uva.nl/en/discipline/literary-studies/literary-studies.html.

You will teach a curriculum that has already been developed, contribute to further improving education in the broad field of literary and cultural analysis and identify opportunities for improvement. You can be deployed on a broad range of educational duties and are able to offer inspiring lecturers and seminars. In addition, your educational duties will include supervising theses and contributing to innovations and improvements of the curriculum.

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • teaching, in English, in the Literary and Cultural Analysis BA, the Comparative Literature MA and the Comparative Cultural Analysis MA;
  • supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses;
  • contributing to the improvement of education and identifying opportunities for improvement;
  • making contributions to the development and implementation of improvements in didactics and/or content of the designated curriculum;
  • staying up to date with the professional literature and integrating new research insights in teaching the designated curriculum;
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties.

What do you have to offer?
You enjoy working closely with others to develop and teach modules in the broad interdisciplinary field of literary and cultural analysis. You actively reflect on your teaching and make adjustments when you notice that something is not working or co-teachers or students indicate this in their feedback. You are willing to teach on cultural objects/phenomena and theories beyond your own research focus, and thrive in interdisciplinary teams of teachers and researchers. You are committed to fostering an inclusive classroom. You understand that courses (including electives) do not stand alone but are part of the larger curriculum of a programme and you take this into account when designing your syllabi. You are also able and willing to think – with the rest of the Literary and Cultural Analysis team – about how programmes need to evolve over time in response to changes in society, in government education policy, in university or faculty policies and in the needs and skills base of successive generations of students.

Your experience and profile:
  • PhD in literary studies, cultural analysis or a related field;
  • experience with teaching in BA and MA programmes at an academic level;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the literary and cultural analysis capacity group;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), or willing to participate in the UTQ programme;
  • good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the possibility to participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II.

Experience teaching ethnographic and/or community engagement methods is a plus.

What can we offer you?
We offer a temporary employment for 12 months with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 22,8 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 4,332 to € 5,929 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

What else do we offer?
  • excellent possibilities for further professional development and education;
  • the opportunity to participate in the UTQ programme;
  • the opportunity to participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
  • an enthusiastic, inspiring and professional academic team;
  • an inspiring academic and international work environment in the heart of Amsterdam.
