Job description

The Philosophy and Public Affairs group is looking for a candidate to teach in the BA and MA programmes of the Philosophy department. The employment contract is for a fixed period of two years, due to replacement of staff members who are temporarily working elsewhere.

What are you going to do?
You will contribute to the ethics and political philosophy curriculum of the PPA group, both in introductory and more advanced courses in the BA and MA programmes. You will give seminars, review papers, supervise BA and MA theses, and grade exams. Opportunity will be given for you to develop your own course(s) within your area of expertise. You will also participate in other group activities, such as attending talks and colloquia.

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Teaching;
  • supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses;
  • contributing to the improvement of education and identifying opportunities for improvement;
  • making contributions to the development and implementation of improvements in didactics and/or content of the designated curriculum;
  • staying up to date with the professional literature and integrating new research insights in teaching the designated curriculum;
  • contributing by developing a course within your area of expertise
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties.

What do you have to offer?
We are looking for a highly motivated colleague with an PhD in Philosophy, and with a demonstrable interest and expertise in practical philosophy (ethics and political philosophy). You already have some experience with teaching, grading, and supervision, both on BA and MA level. You are highly collegial, confident yet eager to learn, communicative and stress resistant.

Your experience and profile:
  • PhD in Philosophy, with a clear focus on either Ethics or Political and Social Philosophy;
  • experience with teaching in BA and MA programmes at an academic level, specifically in practical philosophy;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the Philosophy and Public Affairs group;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained a UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the qualification within three years of employment;
  • you have a good command of the Dutch language; sufficient to teach courses in Dutch.
  • good command of English.

What can we offer you?
We offer temporary employment of 24 months with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30,4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 4,332 to € 5,929 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
