Job description

Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs is looking for anAssistant Professor (0.5 FTE, plus 0.3 FTE temporary increase during the first year).

Starting Summer 2018 LUC seeks to appoint one Assistant Professor to join the core staff for teaching and research in the Global Public Health major within our international Liberal Arts & Sciences honours BSc programme centered around ‘Global Challenges.’ The Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching undergraduate students in the field of health psychology, social determinants of health, health and prosperity, and community health. 

The Assistant Professor should further show clear affinity with the Global Challenges foundation of our programme, which is also linked to the international profile of The Hague as ‘International City of Peace, Justice and Security’.  In addition to the core of international faculty based at LUC itself, leading scholars from the other faculties of Leiden University participate in the teaching of the programme. LUC staff is able to take full advantage of being part of Leiden University while also contributing actively to the energetic and stimulating atmosphere of our college community in The Hague. This means that the Assistant Professor will also be expected to promote conversation and synergy between LUC and other institutes within the University relevant to the Global Public Health theme.

  • Contributing basic and specialist teaching to undergraduate students;
  • Connecting to other institutes within Leiden University, regarding both teaching and research, as relevant to the BSc Global Public Health major;
  • Connecting to other national and international organizations to facilitate internship possibilities and field work;
  • Carry out research and work towards obtaining external research grants;
  • Participating in and contributing to LUC’s  recruitment and admission activities;
  • Participating in and contributing to the social and academic life of LUC;
  • Act as an academic advisor to students.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in a field related to the theme Global Public Health, for example international health, community health, health policy, or health economics;
  • Superior command of English and willingness to learn the Dutch language;
  • Affinity with the concept of Liberal Arts & Sciences education at university level;
  • Outstanding teaching skills, evidenced by formal evaluations, and a clear interest in innovative teaching methods and approaches;
  • Very good research skills, evidenced by publication record, and the ability to obtain competitive grants;
  • Excellent social skills and ability to work constructively in a team.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will be appointed for two years. During the first year there will be a temporary increase of the working hours up to 30.4 hours per week. The second year will be an appointment for 19 hours per week. The appointment will be according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (cao Nederlandse Universiteiten). The salary will be in the normal range for an Assistant Professor; the level depends on previous experience, and ranges between €3,475 and €5,405 (pay scale 11 or 12) gross per month on the basis of a full time appointment.
