Sanquin - Technician

Job description

The major focus of the Phagocyte Laboratory is the role of phagocytes, in particular neutrophils and macrophages, in cancer and infection. Using state-of-the-art facilities of Sanquin Research we study molecular and cellular functions of phagocytes from healthy individuals as well as from patients with a wide variety of immunodeficiencies. Our major goal is to understand how the immune system is regulated in combating cancer and microbial pathogens. We actively implement this knowledge into translational projects through collaborations with various academic hospitals as well as partners from biopharmaceutical industry with the intention to improve patient care. The Phagocyte Laboratory is embedded within the Blood Cell Research department accommodating both research as well as diagnostic groups studying a wide range of innate immune cells. The research in the Phagocyte Laboratory is supported by the international, open, and collaborative atmosphere within the Sanquin Research division.

Where you will work:

Neutrophils are the most abundant leukocytes in the circulation with a powerful arsenal of antimicrobial and anticancer tools. We have previously identified several pathways involved in the immune response to pathogens and cancer cells (such as e.g. the innate immune checkpoint CD47-SIRPin cancer) and we are actively studying other innate immune checkpoints on phagocytes with the goal to improve their capacity to kill cancer cells in the context of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. Next to it we intensively study various mechanisms of neutrophil deficiencies utilizing material obtained from patients suffering from infections. We are looking for a candidate with affinity for innate immunity who is capable of supporting several parallel projects within the Phagocyte Laboratory.
