Job description

As part of the WP2 package of the RaDAR (Risk and Disease burden of Antimicrobial Resistance) Project, we are looking for a PhD student to study the transmission of antimicrobial resistance elements between populations, assess infection risk and set the stage for designing intervention measures and assessing them in silicio. This modeling study will first use a massive sample library available within the consortium, comprised of 30,000 samples from human and animal populations and the environment. For reasons of relevance and genetic data availability, the focal point will be Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs), but the methods developed should be more widely applicable. You will be expected to write scientific papers on the results of the project and give presentations at national and international meetings.

Requirements

You have successfully completed a Masters degree in theoretical biology, health sciences, mathematics, biostatistics or a similar discipline. Experience with mathematical modeling and advanced statistical techniques would be an advantage. You have a broad interest in the application of mathematical methods to epidemiological and public health questions. As well as having the ability to communicate effectively with researchers from other disciplines and strong proficiency in written and spoken English, you should be eager to learn to solve problems at the interface between theoretical epidemiology and public health.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: temporary appointment for 4 years.

For this 100% post, the maximum salary will be € 2.919,-. This will be a temporary appointment for four years.

The Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care is part of the University Medical Center Utrecht. It carries out scientific research, provides education, and offers expertise and facilities in the area of clinical health sciences. The infectious diseases division is a growing research group at the Center, and it has a strong focus on the application of mathematical modeling as a research tool for epidemiology and public health. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience of collaboration at the interface between mathematical modeling, statistics, epidemiology and public health.
