Job description

The Chair is part of the Societal Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. The professor to occupy this Chair will be the Head of the Sociology group (50% teaching and 50% research). There is also a Chair of Empirical Sociology and two Chairs focusing on Research Methodology.

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Sociology was ranked first in Elsevier’s ranking and in the ‘Keuzegids Universiteiten 2017’, after having been elected as the best study programme in the country for eight consecutive years, and was assessed as a ‘top’ programme (as was the Master’s degree programme in Policy and Applied Research in 2016).
The research takes place at the Radboud Social Cultural Research (RSCR) institute, which also organises the Research Master’s degree programme. PhD education is offered by the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). The national committee that evaluated all sociological research in the Netherlands concluded: ‘The research carried out at Nijmegen is of a very high standard’ (Research Assessment 2014, 18).

The main tasks of this Chair are:

  • Developing and conducting innovative research regarding the overarching theme ‘social cohesion’, i.e., social integration in general and family ties in particular as well as social interactions at the meso- and micro-levels; acquiring external funding for PhDs on these lines of research and supervising them.
  • Developing and teaching inspiring courses at all levels of educational tracks and acting as the overall coordinator to continue to improve the quality of the tracks and increase the number of students.
  • Managing all leading, administrative and executive tasks as Head of Sociology and stimulate staff members to contribute in teams to the overall quality of research and teaching at all levels; contribute to management tasks at Radboud University and in national, professional organisations.
  • Contributing to knowledge dissemination and valorisation activities in cooperation with societal partners.

Requirements

  • a PhD degree in the social sciences and an outstanding track record of publications in international high ranking journals of the social sciences to convincingly fulfil the admission criteria of RSCR and the national research school ICS;
  • evidence of specifying and testing hypotheses derived from major theories with data from large scale data collections, both in fundamental and applied research; participation in cross-national innovative research projects;
  • proven competence in the acquisition of external funding, showing scientific and societal recognition;
  • inspirational and high-quality teaching at all levels (Bachelor, Master and Research Master); experience in coordinating courses and teaching programmes; experience with supervising PhD projects;
  • proven management and executive qualities, required to be a successful group leader both in research and teaching; in monodisciplinary and multidisciplinary activities within the social sciences, and at local and national levels;
  • the ability to motivate staff members to work as a team in contributing to research and teaching;
  • affinity and experience with encouraging colleagues for knowledge dissemination and valorisation creating societal impact;
  • ability and willingness to conduct administrative and organisational tasks;
  • explicit conformity to standards of scientific integrity and Radboud University’s mission statement;
  • excellent command of spoken and written Dutch (or the willingness to learn Dutch within two years) and an excellent command of spoken and written English, preferably at Cambridge Proficiency level C2.

Conditions of employment

  • employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE
  • a maximum gross monthly salary of € 7,921 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale H2)
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • duration of the contract: indefinite period
  • Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO): Full Professor, Level 2 (Hoogleraar 2)
