The PhD candidate will work in the research program "Self-reliance and social insurance over the lifecycle". In this research program we investigate the response of individuals and families to the increased flexibility on the labor market, and reductions in the coverage of public social insurance schemes (such as unemployment insurance, disability insurance, social assistance and pension schemes). Frequently, our research findings are used in the public debate and by policy makers. The research program has received funding from lnstituut Gak for the period 2017-2023. During this period, a team of PhD candidates and senior researchers conduct empirical analyses around this theme.

In this position you will;

• Conduct innovative empirical research;
• Write a PhD thesis based on papers;
• Submit the papers of the thesis for publication in academic journals;
• Teach in the program of the Department of Economics.

• A Master's degree in economics, econometrics, social sciences, or a field with a strong quantitative component;
• Experience in using statistical software (e.g. Stata, R);
• Interest in doing research in economics;
• Excellent skills in quantitative research methods and in writing;
• Teaching experience is not a requirement, but is considered an advantage;
• An excellent command of the English language is required. Knowledge of the Dutch language is considered an advantage.

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

The appointment as a PhD student will be for a period of four years (initially for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of progress and skills development) leading to the successful completion of a PhD thesis. The appointment will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. Salary range from €2,266 to €2,897 gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale P). The starting date of the appointment is negotiable (but not later than September 1, 2019).
