The Department of Environmental Science at Radboud University has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher specialised in spatially explicit modelling of environmental systems. As a postdoc you will participate in the department’s educational and research activities, focusing on environmental modelling, geographic information systems (GIS) and biodiversity assessment. You will be expected to coordinate at least one or two BSc/MSc courses and actively develop new educational material. Your research will focus on the relationships between environmental conditions, stressors (e.g. chemical pollution) and ecosystem integrity at different spatial scales, i.e. local to global. Examples include the modelling of the chemical fate of substances after emission to the environment, the abundance of species in relation to abiotic conditions, and the emergence of antibiotic resistance in the environment. You will support the senior staff in their research projects and you will be expected to proactively develop research proposals to acquire new funding.
You hold a PhD in Environmental Sciences or a related field. You combine extensive knowledge on natural processes (e.g. in biology, geography, chemistry or physics) with profound mathematical modelling skills, e.g. in languages such as R, Phyton, Java or C++. Experience with spatially explicit and process-oriented modelling of environmental systems must be demonstrated, preferably focusing on the relationships between environmental conditions, stressors (e.g. chemical pollution) and ecosystem integrity (e.g. biodiversity endpoints). Experience with gathering and analysing large data sets from public literature or databases is desirable. Experience with mass balance modelling or individual-based modelling will be an advantage. Your key characteristics are excellence, good command of the English language, team player, motivation, perspicuity and independence.

In environmental management, 1000+ of species are to be protected against 1000+ of different pressures. In the Environment Science (ES) group, we aim to understand and predict both the relative and cumulative impact of anthropogenic stressors on species including humans. We translate detailed mechanisms into overarching principles, applied in models for future projections, particularly in highly populated river deltas and estuaries. The methods developed and the results obtained are used by governments, agencies, industry and consultancies.
