JADS: Academic Interdisciplinary Institute on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is looking for a lecturer/researcher Agrifood & Data

Job description

The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) takes part in the FARM-IT project. The FARM-IT project responds to the challenges regarding datafication in the Agrifood sector. Datafication in the Agri-food sector is apparent in and between all links in the chain. From smart farming to tracking & tracing of animals, measuring consumer behavior, sustainability, data has become indispensable for the competitive position of Dutch Agrifood.

However, the challenge is not only technological in nature. A structural problem is visible on the labor market. Today's employees are insufficiently trained in this matter. The employees of the future still receive training in an education system that has either Datascience or Agrifood as its direction. Current and future demand on the labour market lies in the crossover and supply does not match.

The FARM-IT project meets this challenge. The objective of FARM-IT is to improve the match between supply and demand in the labour market in the crossover between Agrifood and Datascience by training talent capable of organizing Agrifood innovation issues of the future. An important part of the project concerns creating and facilitating innovative forms of education with expertise from various educational institutions with different domain knowledge (Agrifood, Datascience). JADS is looking for a lecturer/researcher Agrifood & Data connecting academic and professional education in cooperation with universities of applied sciences.

  • In exceptional cases, if you do not have a PhD yet, but are willing to work on a PhD thesis and have graduated with excellent marks, we may also discuss dual appointments, combing teaching/researching with your PhD project.

The lecturer/ researcher has teaching and research interests and experience in at least one of the following core areas:

  • Storing and retrieving data (databases);
  • Visualizing and communicating data;
  • Applied machine learning;
  • Privacy, security, and ethics of data;
  • Experiments and experimentation with data;
  • Very large-scale data mining and analysis;
  • Research design and data analysis;
  • Exploring and analyzing data (applied statistics).

Competences
A record of excellent academic or professional performance; the ability to be self-directed with broadly-defined limits on assignments; excellent communication skills, both oral and written; and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse people in a highly multidisciplinary environment.

Conditions of employment

Employer

JADS: The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) is the unique and recent (since 2016) collaboration of two renowned research universities bringing together their top academics to further the interdisciplinary academic field of data science and AI. JADS is an institution that aims to build two bridges. The first bridge is the bridge between (digital) technology and the social sciences. The second bridge is the bridge between academia and society. JADS offers nine academic educational programs (Bachelor, Master, PDEng, PhD and Professional Learning) and three research centers. At these centers we conduct groundbreaking research on data science and create concrete societal value.

The new Mariënburg campus on Data Science is located in a historic and beautiful former convent in the heart of the medieval city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and is within walking distance from the main train station. It is the place where academics with engineering and business/social science competences meet each other and participate in a wide-spread innovative ecosystem. The Mariënburg campus hosts lecture halls, academic labs, student apartments, data start-ups and corporate data labs. By mixing students, academics, and companies, all around the topic of data science, we aim to cross-fertilize, innovate, and transform data into value-adding insights and wisdom to advance society at large.
