Job description

Postdoc. Working in close collaboration with the group leader Prof. Lopes Cardozo, colleagues in the group and MSc students. Collaboration with relevant scientists, national and international.

Research
Fusion energy is commonly described as the ultimate (because ‘inexhaustible, clean and safe’) electricity source with as the one drawback that it is exceedingly difficult to realise. The question whether it is needed is almost never asked. Yet, against the rapidly changing perspective on renewable energy, the question should no longer be if fusion power can be realised, but if – assuming that it can be realised – it will fill a need, provide added value to society and ultimately, if it can be competitive. To address this issue, a series of research questions have been formulated. To answer these, the investigation will draw on fusion science (the status of the mainstream development as well as the potential of alternative schemes), renewable energy (potential and cost) and the energy system (distributed vs. centralised, electricity vs. heat, etc.), and other relevant disciplines, such as economics and transition science. The aim of the study is to provide a science base for policy decisions on the future (direction) of fusion research. The research is of an interdisciplinary nature, and collaboration with specialists from different relevant fields will be fundamental to success.
