VUmc - PhD student Molecular Biologist (MSc); Cohesion weakness: a unique cancer vulnerability of unknown origin

Job description

Your work environment

The project focuses on a newly discovered cancer vulnerability, ‘cohesion weakness’, and aims to unravel how oncogenic transformation impacts on the establishment and stability of sister chromatid cohesion. You will be appointed in the Oncogenetics section of the department of Clinical Genetics at VUmc in Amsterdam, under supervision of junior group leader Dr. Job de Lange. The section is headed by Dr. Rob Wolthuis and is part of the Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA). The project will be carried out in collaboration with Dr. Renee de Menezes of the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of VUmc.

Your challenge

As a PhD student:

  • You construct and validate a cell line panel harboring specific mutations;
  • Perform genome-wide CRISPR knock-out screens and RNA-seq profiles;
  • Carry out functional follow-up studies using available cell biology and microscopy techniques (support by a lab technician will be provided).

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated researcher with:

  • Master of Science degree with a background in molecular biology and genetics with a fascination for fundamental cancer biology;
  • A creative, flexible working attitude, combined with a good team spirit.;
  • Significant experience in oncogenic signaling and/or DNA damage and DNA replication stress response pathways;
  • You are able to work independently and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and bioinformaticians;
  • A strong interest and/or previous experience with analyzing large data sets could be an advantage. Further training in this area can be provided within VUmc.

Conditions of employment

Salary Scale OIO: 2244 tot 2874 euro gross when employed full-time (depending on qualifications and experience).

The appointment is initially for one year and continued to 4 years after mutual consent.
