Job description

We are looking for a talented scientist in the field of light microscopy/spectroscopy with a passion for science and education, to become Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Biophysics (

As the chosen candidate, you will be responsible for the implementation and coordination of new research activities in biophysics, while working your way up to a leading international position. The focus of your research will be on the development and/or application of light microscopy and spectroscopic methods, preferably applicable to the study of photosynthetic processes. Being an integral member of the faculty, you will also be responsible for teaching and motivating students, as well as developing new courses.

As a specialist in microscopy/spectroscopy, you will be helping to further advance the work of our MicroSpectroscopy Research Facility, which is at the forefront of multiple cutting-edge setups and techniques, including TIRF single molecule setups, FLIM confocal microscopy, and ultrafast fluorescence spectroscopy. You are an ambitious and enthusiastic scientist and a team player, devoted to research and education in the field of (bio)physics and (micro)spectroscopy. You hold a PhD degree in (bio)physics, physical chemistry or a related field. You are adept at working in a multicultural organisation. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and orally, and the willingness to explore new fields in collaboration with others, are essential, while international experience (particularly experience in project management and acquisition of research funding) is appreciated. Being able to demonstrate understanding and a proven interest in the research field of photosynthesis is a further advantage.

Further requirements:
  • Minimum three years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Strong publication and academic record relevant to the field.
  • Proven didactic abilities and enthusiasm for teaching and working with students.
  • The ambition to ultimately graduate to full professor within a Tenure Track system.

You will also be able to develop your own line of research; our lab provides access to a wide range of optical equipment (see links above), as well as excellent support in (opto-)electronics, spectroscopy, and (bio)chemistry. All training is provided, of course.
For the Assistant-Professor level we offer a salary based on your expertise and experience between € 3.637,- and € 5.656,- gross per month (scale 11 or 12 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). We offer a temporary contract which can finally lead to permanent position.

The Laboratory of Biophysics (BIP) engages in research of the physical aspects of life processes and teaching of the fundamentals of physics and biophysics and their application in the life sciences. The research of BIP relies on both optical and magnetic resonance techniques.
