Job description

The project focuses on the possibility of expanding smoke-free zones. How does this protect children and what does it take to introduce them in the Netherlands? What legal obstacles are encountered when introducing such smoke-free zones? In this project, we intend to learn from other countries where new zones have already been made smoke-free.

It concerns an appointment of 0.5 FTE for two years. During this period, you investigate the nature, implementation and enforcement of existing regulation of smoke-free zones in a number of countries in the world. You also look at the local initiatives in the cities of Rotterdam and Groningen. You investigate these domestic and local bans also from a human rights perspective, paying specific attention the interests and rights of children. Qualitative research (interviews) forms part of the research.

Department

Faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid

The Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen is a modern, (inter)nationally oriented institution, which builds on a longstanding tradition of almost four centuries. The faculty has the ambition to measure itself with the best law faculties in Europe and continuously renews its curriculum in order to educate lawyers with a broad orientation, accustomed to look beyond the borders of their own (sub) discipline. The faculty’s research is often cross- and multidisciplinary. The faculty offers several (inter)national bachelor and master programmes and hosts more than 4000 students and almost 350 members of staff.

In the department of Transboundary Legal Studies (TLS), the boundaries of and in law are investigated and explored, in research and by extension in education. In a highly technological and strongly internationalising society, many complex social issues transcend borders. This has an impact on the role of the law in the solution of these issues. Boundaries between traditional legal disciplines are broken to find appropriate outcomes. A one-dimensional approach to legal questions is often no longer possible. TLS covers the areas of expertise in international law, IT law, political sciences and legal theory.

Global Health Law Groningen (GHLG) is a multidisciplinary research centre that focuses on the international standards protecting health, including human rights. Key themes include tobacco regulation, unhealthy diets, and reproductive and environmental health.
