Job description
The School of Industrial Engineering is one of the longest-established IE Schools in Europe, with a strong presence in the international research and education community, amongst others in the field of Information Systems (IS). Within the School of Industrial Engineering four degree programs are taught: BSc in Industrial Engineering & Management Science, MSc in Operations Management & Logistics, MSc in Innovation Management, and PhD in Operations, Logistics and Innovation Management. IS forms a core part of all educational curricula. The research in the School is strongly connected to the Brainport area, the high-tech industrial area around Eindhoven.
The Information Systems group teaches and conducts research in the area of business information systems, focusing on advanced support of operational business processes and business services, both within individual organizations and in the context of dynamic networks of organizations. Research aims at data-driven decision support systems, design and analysis tools, and information system architectures, using advanced prototypes. The research approach is model-centric and engineering-oriented, integrating basic and applied research with contemporary real-world cases. Main application domains are the services industry, health care, supply chains and logistics, and high-tech manufacturing. The research of the IS group is embedded in Beta, the research school for Operations Management & Logistics and SIKS, the Netherlands Research School for Information and Knowledge Systems.
PhD project
The PhD position is part of the NWO funded project 'DiaGame: serious and personalized game for self-management of diabetes.' The DiaGame project applies learning systems and biomedical simulations to develop a data-driven, personalized serious game that empowers individuals with diabetes to manage the disease they are facing. In order to personalize the game, we will integrate our expertise on processing of personal data collected from health-related smartphone apps into our game platform. The information that this approach yields will be used to personalize the simulation that drives the game. Together, this will allow the use of patient-gathered health data to make the diabetes game a realistic representation of the condition of the gamer. Hence, the goal is to obtain a personalized simulator for a person's metabolism. In this way, DiaGame will change the approach to diabetes care by using data sciences in support of a data-driven personal diabetes games for learning to manage their own disease. Ultimately, this will improve the quality of life for patients and lighten the socio-economic and medical burden that diabetes has. The partners in the project include the Department of Biomedical Engineering of TU/e and Maxima Medical Centre in Eindhoven.

The PhD candidate is expected to do scientific research in the domain described, write a PhD thesis and publish research results in scientific journals. The research is executed under the supervision of dr. Pieter Vangorp and prof.dr.ir Uzay Kaymak from the IS group. The candidate also participates in the PhD education program. A small part of the position involves teaching in courses offered by the IS group.
Applicants should have completed (or be close to completion of) a Master's degree in information systems, computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, or a comparable domain with a solid background in quantitative research methods. Fluency in English is required.

Conditions of employment
We offer
- a challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious university, and you will be part of the DiaGame team;
- an appointment as a PhD student for a period of 4 years with intended starting date of 1 November 2019; the gross salary is in the range of €2325 - €2972 per month (on a full-time basis); in addition, 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end of year allowance;
