Job description

We are looking for highly motivated candidates to join a research group that synthesises theories and methods from cognitive neuroscience, neural network modelling, cognitive psychology, and linguistics in order to understand how the brain represents and creates compositionality during language production and comprehension. The goal of the project is to collect spoken language magnetoencephalography (MEG) data and to test the limits of contemporary neural network models (viz. deep learning) against explicitly symbolic and rhythmic neural networks in predicting the oscillatory and network dynamics there in.

Department

Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging

The Netherlands has an outstanding track record in the language sciences. Dr Andrea E. Martin’s PI group at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (DCCN) at Radboud University, the Language and Computation in Neural Systems Group (LaCNS), is sponsored by a grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The DCCN brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of cognition in the brain. LaCNS also has a close working relationship with the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our research group provides access to state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from neuroimaging, computational modelling, behaviour, and formal approaches. The research is conducted in an international setting at all participating institutions. English is the lingua franca.
