The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam is looking for a Lecturer in Modern European History and/or History of European Integration.

A fixed-term, one-year appointment to carry out teaching duties predominantly in the Bachelor programme of European Studies. Candidates should hold a PhD in European Studies, History, Politics or International Relations with a specific interest in the political history of Europe and the European Union. Expertise is required to co-ordinate and teach specialist courses in modern European history, such as historical overview courses and courses on the history of European integration, as well as more general courses in European Studies, e.g. historical research methods and philosophy of the humanities. 

Successful candidates should be able to bring historical questions into dialogue with contemporary affairs and possess a good knowledge of the history of European integration and/or history of international relations in Europe. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated scholars who enjoy working and teaching in an international and inter-disciplinary setting.


  • The development, coordination and provision of teaching in English (and preferably also Dutch), in the BA and MA programmes;
  • supervising BA and MA theses and tutoring students;
  • an active contribution to the development of courses and the broader teaching programme;
  • taking part in committees and working groups, and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

The ideal candidate:

  • will possess relevant teaching background in European Studies, preferably with experience of working in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • has a PhD in a relevant research field, or PhD within close reach (i.e. thesis has been accepted by the PhD defense committee);
  • has solid experience of different forms and levels of delivering university teaching, including thesis supervision;
  • has (the willingness to acquire) the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO);
  • has affinity with ICT in university teaching; experience of digital and audiovisual teaching facilities is an advantage;
  • is a good team worker;
  • has good organizational experience and skills;
  • has good command of English and Dutch; eventually able to teach in both English and Dutch.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: one year.

The appointment will be temporary for one year and will start preferably 1 January 2020, or 1 February 2020 at the latest. The UFO profile for this position is Docent 4 or 3 (scale 10/11) with a gross monthly salary ranging from €2,709 to €4,978, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week), depending on relevant teaching experience. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies.

European Studies at the University of Amsterdam is a large and highly successful academic department which operates as a hub for interdisciplinary research on Europe, and provides exciting and popular degree programmes at BA and MA level to over 1,000 students. It successfully connects research and teaching in History, Culture, Politics, Law, and Economics, and focuses both on the EU and on a wider Europe, broader in both time and space.

The BA programme (taught in separate Dutch and English tracks) consists of interdisciplinary core modules like European Integration and National Thought, alongside disciplinary specialisms (Majors) in European History, Culture, East European Studies, European Law, and Economics. There is a close degree of co-operation in all the programmes between historians, culture and literature specialists, social scientists, lawyers, economists. There is a strong and vibrant research culture in European Studies, which is located in the Faculty’s Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES). Individual and small-group research is encouraged and facilitated, including frequent seminars, conferences, funding opportunities and regular research interaction with colleagues across the range of disciplines.
